Bug Description

Binary package hint: dkms

I have a intrepid ibex computer with ati x800pro graphics card.
In hardy i had to use envy to get my graphics driver correct, but after upgrading to intrepid i removed envy and used jockey to install the driver. But after upgrading to latest kernel 2.6.27-9-generic this error apeared:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Setter opp linux-image-generic (2.6.27.9.13) ...
Setter opp linux-restricted-modules-generic (2.6.27.9.13) ...
Setter opp linux-generic (2.6.27.9.13) ...
Setter opp linux-headers-2.6.27-9 (2.6.27-9.19) ...
Setter opp linux-headers-2.6.27-9-generic (2.6.27-9.19) ...
Examining /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d.
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/dkms
 * Running DKMS auto installation service for kernel 2.6.27-9-generic

 * fglrx (8.543)...
fglrx: Multiple versions in DKMS. Unsure what to do. Resolve manually.
   ...fail!
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/nvidia-common

Setter opp linux-headers-generic (2.6.27.9.13) ...
Setter opp linux-libc-dev (2.6.27-9.19) ...
Setter opp ruby1.8 (1.8.7.72-1ubuntu0.1) ...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After this i have no 3d support, compiz is not working.
In jockey the driver is marked as not activated, but clicking "activate" does not seem to solve the problem.

Exact same problem here with Intrepid while updating to kernel 2.6.27-9-generic 64 bits on an Acer computer with an Athlon64/Opteron and an ATI RS690 [Radeon X1200 Series] graphics card.

Since the update, Ubuntu us functioning in low graphics mode. fglrxinfo reports "BadRequest".

I unfortunately do not know where I can find the error message that appeared during the update as posted above in the initial message by toffyrn, but I recall it was the same : "Multiple versions in DKMS. Unsure what to do. Resolve manually."

Attached is the output result from ls -alR /var/lib/dkms

Noticed this: "run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/nvidia-common"

Should it be running nvidia-common when i have an ati card?

Ok. Thanks. Tried to fix it and then crashed my xorg.
Fixed the issue by formatting computer :)

I was able to fix the issue of multiple entries of fglrx in DKMS by following the steps in the following page: http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/ati.run

Basically, you delete all instances of fglrx and you re-install the ati drivers.

Same issue on update from 8.04 -> 8.10. Solved with Håvard and Eric's tips:

sudo rm -r /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/*
sudo apt-get remove fglrx*

downloaded ATi's latest installer from their site

sudo ./ati-driver-installer-8-12-x86.x86_64.run

reboot

Interestingly enough, EnvyNG, which setup my X1300 (almost) perfectly under 8.04 with only a few tweaks required, no longer works under 8.10. After using that, I'd end up with glxinfo & fglrxinfo giving either segfaults or other bizarre errors, such as "../../src/xcb_io.c:352: _XReply: Assertion `!dpy->xcb->reply_data' failed".

Adjusting the package to fglrx-installer. fglrx-installer needs to check for older versions that are registered in it's postinst and clean them up before going on.

This bug was fixed in the package fglrx-installer - 2:8.573-0ubuntu2

---------------
fglrx-installer (2:8.573-0ubuntu2) jaunty; urgency=low

  * debian/control:
    - Add libxinerama1 to build depends.
  * debian/xorg-driver-fglrx.preinst:
    - Move user modifications out of the way for files that are stored in
      /etc/ati when upgrading package. Unfortunately, although these files
      are stored in /etc, AMD has indicated that they should not be treated
      as conf files. (LP: 307643)
  * debian/fglrx-kernel-source.prerm:
    - Add in a check for old versions of fglrx that might have DKMS directories
      sitting around. If any are found, they are removed so as to prevent possible
      conflicts. (LP: #303148)
