Bug Description

I'm not sure where exactly this bug exists, but I know that it was introduced sometime after Feb 16th. Basically, my networking suddenly stopped working. For reference, I'm using a Linksys WLAN504G PCI wireless card. The card is now unable to connect to my router. Note that I *can* connect to the internet when I reinstall Ubuntu -- it is able to download updates, and the lights on the PCI card flash appropriately -- but once I'm actually running Ubuntu, all functionality ceases.

I can see the following messages in my messages.log file:

ath0: ath_chan_set: unable to reset channel 2 (2417 Mhz)
ath0: ath_chan_set: unable to reset channel 4 (2427 Mhz)

Et cetera...

In my syslog, I can see:

dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on ath0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 13
dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on ath0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 5
dhclient: No DHCPOFFERS received
dhclient: No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.
dhclient: receive_packet failed on ath0: Network is down.

And so forth. This seems to be the case whether or not I'm using DHCP or supplying a static IP address.

If I try "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" I get similar results in the terminal.

If I try "sudo ifconfig ath0 down" and "sudo ifconfig ath0 up", then sometimes the syslog just records more of the same, and sometimes the computer freezes instantly, with no messages that I can find left in any of the logs.

I have a similar problem with an atheros chipset card too, a netgear WG511T. It just is not recognized by network-manager. If I plug it, it doe not appear in the devices. Besides, network-manager does not automatically connect to wired networks, so I suspect in my case it might be the culprit.

Is there _any_ way to reset all network confs in the computer?

i have the exactly same problem with dapper flight 4 ubuntu and kubuntu. during installation i can download packages, but after rebooting eth0 is not able to receive anything., eth0 is active, DNSs are automatically right detected, DHCP is on.
on ubuntu 5.10 everything worked perfectly.

This sounds like what I'm experiencing on Ubuntu PPC with all the latest Dapper packages, too :/

FWIW, problem for me seems to be that the routing table isn't being updated properly, e.g. there's no default route... when I added a default route with the gateway for my network, things started working again.

Hello, I am also having a problem with my Atheros card, which is a D-Link DWL-AG660 32-bit Cardbus PCMCIA card. I am using version 5.10 Breezy Badger. I am currently reinstalling it for about the 12 time or so due to this problem. My error messages are very different from those already posted however. I am "installing the base system" at the moment on my Ubuntu Laptop, but I'll try to do this brom memory. dmesg mentions something like:
[blah-blah] IRQ 11.
Nobody cared.
Disabling IRQ 11 Try booting with the "IRQPoll" kernel parameter.
[This message set repeats several times].

I never seem to get this message on a fresh install. This happens after I go installing extra packages using aptitude. The messages at first don't happen until an uptime of about 20-30 minutes or so the first time it occurs, then progressively sooner. Eventually, it occurs during bootup immediately after hotplug starts in initlevel 'S'.

In every case, I have run 'dpkg-reconfigure hotplug' and set hotplug to controll all "Auto" ifaces. In every case, I have edited '/etc/network/interfaces' and changed it to:

---cut---
auto lo eth0 ath0

iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet dhcp

iface ath0 inet dhcp
---cut---

My laptop doesn't have any built-in network interfaces, not even IrDA.

I beleive it may be related to a package install. If anyone knows where aptitude's activity log is located, please let me know so I can back it up with each reinstall. I do not find it in /var/log. I often use package sources "backports" and "universe", so there might be a renegade package there.

After this problem occurs, the "link" LED on my PC-Card does flash, as it does after it has been inserted, but has not yet been brought "up".. After this problem occurs 'dhclient' seems to time out. 'cardctl ident' reports no card is inserted in either slot. 'cardctl eject 0' causes LED to stay off. Attempts to bring up ath0 after this problem is triggered reports 'SIG<something>IO: device not present [or 'no such device' or something similar].

Good luck hunting this one down, and let me know what else I can do to help. (ie post syslogs/dmesg contents, etc.)

what output do you get from ifconfig and iwconfig?
could this be releated to https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/31502

OK one problem at a time folks. Let's not overload the bug with problems on different hardware that might not be the same bug...

Could you attach the output of

Okay, I need to withdraw my earlier bug report, It looks like my D-Link card is defective. After formatting and installing Windows XP (yuck!) in order to obtain support from D-Link tech support, the card is not recognized on my machine, nor on another machine I borrowed. The error messages I once received are no longer occuring. In fact, the drivers/Kernel modules are no longer being loaded upon insert, andWindows XP machines recognise the device as an unknown PCI card!!!

In short, please disregard my previous submission (and this one too...).

Update to the MA521 Netgear problem. The card will work provided you configure the SSID and other wireless parameters. I would think the install should query the user during install?

I ungraded from 5.10 to 6.06 LE, using a netgear wg511 wireless card. Upgrade renamed by interface from eth2 to eth 3and erased my wep security settings.

I enabled the eth3 interface and reentered my wep security info, and the card connects to my wireless network, but ia am not able to access the internet. When I configure network settings in admin mode, I see correct values for my domain name servers, but no default gateway. When I try to update the gateway, I enter the IP address and click on apply. When I reopen network settings, the gateway has no value and I still have no connectivity.

Please check your network settings if they are recieving IP packets to your server, If you revieve a IP packets - double check the DNS server if there is any, and check connection setting in your web browser...

P.S. try to configure using DHCP connection your wireless network...

Sorry, I have no idea. It's now been a long time since I've used Ubuntu.

Good luck,
