Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-firmware

Hi,

Could you please include keyspan firmware.

Today I was trying to use a serial to usb converter and it requires a firmware. I had to fetch the FC10 rpm package and extract the firmware from it to make the converter works.

SRU Justification for Intrepid/Jaunty/Karmic

Impact: Keyspan USB serial devices do not work without firmware

Patch Description: Enable firmware to be included in the Keyspan kernel module.

Patch: UBUNTU: Enable amd64 -generic keyspan firmware

Test Case: Insert Keyspan serial device. Check dmesg for:

'keyspan 6-1:1.0: Keyspan - (without firmware) converter detected'

When firmware is loaded from the kernel modules it will say:

'firmware: using built-in firmware keyspan/usa49w.fw'

Please fix in Jaunty !

Every second ubuntu release seems to break the keyspan firmwares ... last time it was the config option not enabled, this time I suppose it's something else, and everytime we have to battle to get them back. Waiting for the next release isn't a reasonable option for a regression like that.

Cheers,
Ben.

As a work around, I converted kernel-firmware-2.6.29.1-1.rt4.1.fc10.ccrma.noarch.rpm for Fedora 10 to a deb package with alien and installed. Seems to work great with my Jaunty 2.6.28-11-generic kernel.

My Keyspan USB serial adapter works perfectly now.

It will probably break with the next kernel release, but it got me back up and going for a little while again.
