Pidgin filetransfers don't generate notifications

Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin-libnotify

Currently if a contact wants to start a file transfert there is no notification. So is when a transfer ends/is canceled.
It would be useful and easy to have those notifications.

I'm trying to write a patch.

I've build this patch, but still not tested if it works. In theory it's almost complete (the strings should be revisited and translated). At least it's a start.

Thank you for working on this. I don't see any particular reason for this to be Ubuntu-specific, though. I suggest instead working to implement it in Pidgin <http://developer.pidgin.im/>.

The reason I suggest Pidgin itself, rather than pidgin-libnotify <http://gaim-libnotify.sourceforge.net/>, is that notification bubbles aren't really an appropriate way to present file transfers. You should be able to accept or decline file transfers. You should be able to see upload/download progress. You should be able to open or reveal completed downloads at your leisure, rather than having only one chance immediately after each one has finished. And ideally, all these functions should be presented in a single interface rather than in two or three separate ones. In <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NotificationDesignGuidelines#Morphing%20window> we've presented an example of a design that would let you achieve these things.

There's already a window that does the things you are suggesting.

This is simply a way to gain the attention of the user. If the user
receives a file transfer request, a window is opened in the
background, so the user will not notice it easily.

So, maybe you could work on making the window attract attention in the way shown in the notification design guidelines?

My opinion is to treat a transfer request in the same way as a message
from a user.
I don't see the point of doing something different.

Can you tell me why this is wrong for you?

For three main reasons.
1. Usually you need to accept an incoming file before it will even begin downloading. (I don't know whether this is the case in Pidgin, though, because unfortunately I have never successfully sent or received a file using it.)
2. It's helpful to know how soon the file transfer will finish, but (as I wrote in the design guidelines) a notification bubble isn't a good way of showing progress, because it could block the queue of notifications for minutes or even hours, preventing notification bubbles from other programs appearing.
3. Once an incoming file transfer has finished, it's helpful to be able to open or reveal it directly from the same interface that tells you that it's finished.

I will send you a screen(cast/shot) of pidgin and file-transfers, so
you can better figure out.

I didn't understand if you are against showing a notification whenever
someone requests you to start a filetransfer, and when a filetransfer
finishes. This not instead of the confirmation dialog and the progress
window, it's besides.

I'm marking this as "confirmed" and "wishlist" right now. I think that's where the discussion is right now.

summary: - please add notifications for file transfert
+ Pidgin filetransfers don't generate notifications
Changed in pidgin-libnotify (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Wishlist
status: New → Confirmed

here you can find an image of a running filetransfer in pidgin. You
have to accept it (using a dialog box)

Isn't this already implemented in the 0.14 version of the source plugin?
