That might be true. However, I don't know how to do that (and whether it's even possible with Python programs).

Might be possible. I tried and ran into some threading issues. My attempt (which is probably bitrotting) is at https://code.launchpad.net/~kubuntu-members/jockey/jockey-kcm

Jockey has been superseded by software-properties, which now handles
third-party driver configuration.
