Setting up cups-driver-gutenprint (5.2.0~rc1-0ubuntu1) ...
ERROR: Unable to find driver "escp2-wf600"!
Unable to retrieve new PPD file:
Failed to update any PPD files

driver was apparently lost during upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 -- was working previously.

This is simple, the errors of the PPD updater have to be ignored by the post-install script, so that the update finishes even if a certain driver within the package is discontinued or a PPD in /etc/cups/ppd/ is faulty.
