Bug Description

Despite having Auto Arrange unchecked, the Nautilus desktop icons always reset
their positions when I log in. Always, they're being reset to the position that
they would be in if Auto Arrange was enabled, for some reason.

Thanks for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use. Are they aligned on the
grid or autoarranged like if you picked the "sort by name" option?

Oh, sorry. Using Breezy 5.10 RC, and they are autoarranged if I select "Sort by
name". What's odd about this is that this never happened until the latest round
of updates in the last week or two. Before that, the icons always stay put.

Ah, i misinterpreted your question. I menat to say that they are aligned on the
grid as if I had selected Auto Arrange, not Sort by name.

I have this problem too. It is especially evident if you place icons on the
right side of the screen. When you log in, they are either half-way off the
right edge of the screen, or they are an inch or so to the left of the edge (but
neither position is where I put them). This problem began a week or so before
Breezy was released, and continues in the released version of Breezy (even with
a fresh install). This bug wasn't in Hoary, nor was it in the early preleases
of Breezy.

Before screen. USB drive and Trash bin icons placed where I want them. Note
"Keep Aligned" is uncheck. The bug only affects them; if you have your desktop
as the Home folder (as I do, with those other folder shown there), any contents
from there aren't affected.

After logging out, then back in. Note the USB drive and Trash icons are aligned
as if Keep Aligned had been enabled. Rick Wood is right as in this problem
didn't crop up until about a week until Breeezy was final; it had been working
just fine in Breezy before then and in Hoary.

This bug was fixed in the package nautilus - 1:2.23.91-0ubuntu1

---------------
nautilus (1:2.23.91-0ubuntu1) intrepid; urgency=low

  * New upstream version:
    - Make autorun work for blank media
    - No more pixelated SVGs displayed for desktop items with absolute
      icon SVG paths
    - Use consistent labels, mnemonics and icons for trash and delete actions
    - Icon container (i.e. icon view and compact view)
      - RTL support for vertical layout
      - Always reveal entire rows or columns of icons
      - Nicer icon container bounds
      - (Again) vastly improved keyboard navigation, especially in RTL mode
      - No more overlapping desktop icons, when files are added
or volumes mounted while Nautilus is not running. This is implemented
with metadata timestamps when the desktop icons are laid out.
      - Rewrite large chunks of icon canvas text size handling
      - Clear underlying items if hovered or selected item overlaps them
        (lp: #36244, #242487)
    - List View
      - Make scripts work when items in nested list view subdirectories are
        selected
    - Usual minor fix & polish galore
  * debian/control.in:
    - updated libeel requirement

I have this bug again, even though it's said to be fixed.
(I wonder, the line menitioning the fix seems to have nothing to do with the problem described here!)

Appears now since I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic last night.

But: only appears for one user! I have another suer opn the same machine, where Icons keep in the place were I put them, even after loout and login.

Also, for the affected user, the "Keep aligned" setting cannot be turned off as reported in https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/36244

Or better: if turned off, it's turned on again after next login!
So there might be some connection with Nautilus having general problems keeping things as chosen be the user?

Please let me know if you need further information on this!

Checked further:

Strange enough, this seems top affect only smlinks! real files, real folders and the nautilus special files for trash, home folder,. etc. keep in the place I put them even after the next login!

Also, I moved away all . files from my home that I see the slightest bit connected to nautilus and logged in again - but the effect keeps being there.

Please let me know what could be reasons for this and where I could check - I' really used to have a specific order of things on my desktop and it's really a pain not being able to have my order anymore.
