Bug Description

Kubuntu 9.04 amd64 Desktop (2009-04-15)

Starting amarok from the Live-Session will not offer to download additional codecs from restricted. So trying to play any mp3 based files or stream will result in amarok pretend to do something (no error message) without any output.

The same actions on the installed system will bring up the icon to install the codecs and after restarting amarok playing mp3 works.

I am after some research unconvinced this is an amarok problem. Not sure where to place it exactly. The code to show that notification is in /usr/bin/update-notifier-kde, but the installation would need the sources from multiverse, which is not active for the live-system.

I think update-notifier-kde would be a better place to put this than amarok in any case. (It does all the heavy lifting, amarok just accesses it with a dbus interface basically)

Release notes text added:

== Amarok will not offer to download additional codecs when running Kubuntu from the live CD ==

When started from the live session, Amarok will not offer to download additional media codecs when needed, so, for example, it will be unable to play MP3 files. This will work normally after the system is installed to the hard disk. (Bug:362538)

Ok, so we've said that it's a problem in the release notes. Should we invest the effort to make automatic codec installation work in the live session or just leave it be?

I am not even sure this should be fixed in update-notifier-kde... IMHO whatever thingy is responsible for the live session setup should just activate multiverse and universe, making u-n-k temper with the sources.list is just too dangerous.
Opinions?

Seems to work for me with a 10.04 live cd. Perhaps some underlying livecd infrastructure was to blame/was fixed.
