Bug Description

I just noticed that auctex uses xpdf by default when in pdf mode. However, the xpdf package is not required when installing auctex. It is even not officially supported. I am running Jaunty.

Wouldn't a better solution be to still use xpdf and require it from auctex? Both xpdf & xdvi are faster than evince from experience, and also conform to the look & feel of auctex.

I guess it depends on personal preferences. For AucTeX upstream version, it might be appropriate to stick with xpdf, but for a tailored Ubuntu version, going for evince is not a bad idea.
