Confirming. The preinst script of alsa-base 1.0.20+dfsg-1ubuntu1 is a bit of a brown-paper-bag oops.

It contains an erroneous backslash in the shebang line, and an unresolved merge conflict marker!

i've fixed by using alien to unpack fix the leading / in front of the preint script. And changed back to a deb with alien. However because this package is refered to by metapackages (including standard and ubuntu-desktop) it causes these to fail as they rely on the signed package and overwrite my commited.

Can someone package and sign and push to the repository a fixed version asap. Currently this breaks upgrades and net-installs of karmic

After fixing the prefixed / at line one the repacked deb still complains:
