2.49a has not made it into debian yet. According to https://merges.ubuntu.com/universe.html blender is "Awaiting 2.49a from upstream...". Debian status may be tracked here: http://packages.qa.debian.org/b/blender.html .

Yes, but would would you rather make an ubuntu package instead of
merging from Debian? To me it seems like twice as much work if both
Debian and Ubuntu packages it. It sometimes makes sense to package
independent from Debian (typically for imprtant packages), but I'm not
sure here.

That being said, I would very much like to have 2.49a in Karmic soon
to see which bugs can be closed and start troubleshooting the rest. On
my computer, Blender is pretty much useless in Jaunty (I think that is
true for most computers with intel graphics) and I hope we can make it
usable in Karmic.

You don't have to make a new package. There is already one in my PPA that you could use.

Where is it?

I see it neither on packages.debian.org nor ftp.debian.org nor incoming.debian.org.

Thank you Chris. Any idea why 2.49a isn't in Debian?

Christoph, as I wrote in comment #3, the blender status in Debian can be tracked at http://packages.qa.debian.org/b/blender.html . 2.49 is also at ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/b/blender/ . Did you misread Chris' comment as 2.49a?

Oh, yes.
I misread the comment and thought Chris talked about 2.49a.

Yeah, only 2.49 is in Debian at the moment. I'm not sure who wrote the comment on https://merges.ubuntu.com/universe.html about waiting for 2.49a from upstream Anyway, it's not really any extra effort to do the 2.49 merge and update to 2.49a all in one go - 2.49a isn't a particularly big upgrade really, and we don't have to stall on Debian.

This bug was fixed in the package blender - 2.49a+dfsg-0ubuntu1

---------------

    - debian/misc/*.desktop: Add Spanish translation to .desktop
      files.
    - debian/pyversions: 2.6.

No Christoph, you're right, bug is about update blender to 2.49 version, Debian now got this, so bug is fixed now.

 blender (2.49+dfsg-1) unstable; urgency=low

   * New upstream release.
   * Hopefully, since upstream upgraded their embedded copies of ffmpeg
     libraries (which we don't use), and adapted their code accordingly,
     troubles should go away, and at least sound seems to be working fine
     now (Closes: #519396). Thanks to Rebecca Breu for her help.
   * Update dependencies:
      - Add libavdevice-dev and libopenjpeg-dev to Build-Depends.
      - Add “libavdevice” to the “pkg-config --libs” call through the
        50_debian_build_config patch, and “-lopenjpeg” as well.
   * debian/copyright:
      - Update the list of removed directories: add extern/libopenjpeg.
   * Refresh patches:
      - 10_use_systemwide_ftgl
      - 50_debian_build_config
      - 70_portability_platform_detection
   * Drop patches (merged upstream):
      - 90_fix_ffmpeg_includes
      - 91_update_to_new_ffmpeg_api
   * Add patch:
      - 30_fix_python_syntax_warning: Fix Python 2.5/2.6 syntax warning
        during byte-compilation by using “except Foo, bar:” instead of
        “except Foo as bar:”.
   * debian/rules:
      - Get rid of CFLAGS handling, dpkg-buildpackage does that.
      - Get rid of dh_desktop, now a no-op.
   * debian/control:
      - Bump Standards-Version to 3.8.1 (no changes needed).
