Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub2

The binary grub-pc installs /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme which is where grub2 finds its theme.

It looks for /usr/share/images/desktop-base/moreblue-orbit-grub.png to use as the theme background, which is part of desktop-base. Of course, we don't install that by default as it contains all the Debian theming.

So grub shouldn't be looking for that theme, but we also need to provide a theme ourselves.

This seems to be related to bug #391774

Colin Bennets gfxmenu (http://grub.gibibit.com/) has been now merged into upstreams' experimental branch and is now avaible in my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~fzielcke/+archive/grub-ppa/
If anyone feels like working on an official Ubuntu theme, or talk with Colin Bennet, he already made 2 Ubuntu themes as you can see on his site above.
But I don't know when this will be merged into trunk, so maybe it won't be ready for lucid.

I believe that it has now made it into trunk, see the NEWS file in grub trunk:
New in 1.98 - 2010-03-06:
* Graphical menu support.

I am currently trying to get a theme to be selected in 1.99, however even after setting GRUB_THEME in /etc/default/grub and update-grub successfully finding the theme, it doesn't show at boot :/

I would love to make an official desktop/netbook theme in compliance with Ubuntu/Canonical branding standards - however i dont think it would be appropriate to include a logo/brand-mark by default as Grub foots into more than just Ubuntu - any thoughts?

Was this bug resolved by turning Ubuntu's grub purple (long time ago)?

This bug is about using the GRUB2 gfxmenu theme api* to provide a fancy bitmap theme. GRUB being purple is just setting the background colour.
