I tried the new package on both Ubuntu Dapper (latest updates) and Fedora Core 5.
It does not solve the kerning issue as demonstrated at
http://www.gnome.org/~jamesh/firefox-ligature.html

The font now provides hinting for Greek in DejaVu Sans, as shown in
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ttf-dejavu/+bug/39721

For Greek, the font is good.

I tried the new package on Dapper (Flight five, updated to 16 April).

The bullet characters on the GDM login and gksudo are now smaller than before and there is whitespace between them. This would appear to be the desired improvement.

The ligature issue at http://www.gnome.org/~jamesh/firefox-ligature.html appears unchanged from the previous version. I still see the ligatures working fine when the text is left ranged but not when justified, exactly as with version 2.3.

Testing final release version on Dapper (Flight five, updated to 16th April).

Bullet characters on login and gksudo are still ok.

The firefox ligature test page at http://www.gnome.org/~jamesh/firefox-ligature.html now works fine, ligatures work properly for both left ranged and justified text now.

Success for roman fonts then...

Neil, could you please add a screenshot of the firefox-ligature page? It's good to have for the record.

Definitively looks a load better in Firefox; ligatures work again, and directory listings have a nice font again (it recently changed to something like a thin ugly Courier).

With the new ttf-dejavu 2.5 I still have the Bug #35470: "tighted" fonts in the gnome-terminal's menu bar. I could post an screenshot, but it is exactly equal to http://librarian.launchpad.net/1783378/DejaVu.png from #35470.

Still no luck :/ Still using BitStream Vera in my desktop.

The problems in firefox definitely seem fixed in this release, but I wouldn't say that "ligatures work again" -- with the new font the ligatures are no longer used by Pango. However this does fix the rendering problems, so is probably a good idea for the Dapper release.

The ligature problem is a Firefox problem. There's nothing we can do in DejaVu for that. We only "fixed" it by disabling these ligatures by default, meaning that other text renderers like Pango also don't use the ligatures any more.

The real fix should be made in Firefox. After that, we can think about re-enabling the ligatures.

James is right. The problem with ligatures in Firefox has been 'fixed' by rendering them as normal characters with normal spacing and kerning, not by using the ligature forms. My apologies for earlier misleading description...
