Please run 'ESPRESSO_DEBUG=1 sudo espresso' and attach the resulting /var/log/installer/espresso to this bug. Make sure to use a throwaway password if you get that far, as in debug mode the password will appear in the log file.

You may also want to follow the patching instructions in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperBeta/PartitionTableCorruption to avoid possible damage to your system in case you manage to get further than this.

(I think this may be a duplicate of bug 40658, but the debug log will tell me for sure.)

it works when I start espresso using 'ESPRESSO_DEBUG=1 sudo espresso'

if I start espresso with a double click to the install icon on the desktop, it still fails

I would guess it has something to do with (perhaps missing) root privileges for the program to set the time, but this is only a guess

PS: I am using Ubuntu 6.06 beta for i386

Using the AMD64 live cd, I've also had espresso hang after setting the time.

Confirmed here as well. From the time zone selection screen, without selecting a time zone, click 'set time', close the dialog without making changes, then click Forward. I get the same crash described in the 'crashmessage' attachment (Interrupted system call).

Will get a debug log.

Oddly enough, I couldn't reproduce this on any subsequent attempt in that session,
but after rebooting into the same live CD, I was able to reproduce it on the first try again. Here's the debug log.

Matt, the line numbers there indicate that you're using an out-of-date live CD (i.e. one without debconf 1.4.72ubuntu4). I just checked on little and all the live filesystems in the current daily build are sufficiently up to date to have this bug fixed.

Michael, could you try today's daily build (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/) and see if it still fails for you?

That CD was 20060502 for amd64, and had debconf 1.4.72ubuntu3, yes
