Session Preferences dialog missing, or maybe renamed and regressed

Bug Description

This bug covers two issues: documentation of a changed feature, and the change itself.

SUMMARY: No way to control logout confirmation or delays!

Documentation still claims that this is possible:

The "Sessions Preferences" dialog is missing from the System->Preferences menu.

NOTE: The Sessions Preferences dialog is documented under System->Help and Support. I can't tell you how to directly bring up that documentation (the Search feature produces generally unhelpful results...)
But the following sequence finds the documentation on my system:
  System->Help and Support
  Click "Customizing Your Computer" in the Topics column on the left.
  Click "4. Customising other aspects of the desktop"
  Click "Configuring Your Desktop" in topic list on the right
  Click "8.5.2 Sessions Preferences"
  Control-F and search for "confirmation dialog" on the page

There is no "Sessions" dialog under System->Preferences.
There is a preferences dialog called "Startup Applications" but it does not contain
the "Session Options" listed in table 8-17 except for "Automatically save changes".

Note: In ubuntu 9.04 you could disable logout confirmation (and the time delay) in a Preferenced panel reached by right-clicking the logout/reboot thingie on the right end of the panel. But in 9.10 there is no Preferences offered there.

There is no change there between jaunty and karmic, maybe you did install some extra software?

No, it is not (merely) documentation, but a functional change since 9.04.

In 9.04, the logout/reboot thingie's "About" says "Fast User Switch Applet 2.24.0", and it's right-click menu has "Preferences", which includes a check-box option "Show confirms for logout, restart and shutdown".

But in 9.10 the logout/reboot thingie says it is "indicator-applet-session 0.1" and it HAS NO Preferences in the right-click menu.

So that widget seems to have been completely replaced with something which is missing important features.

Just wanted to add that I think many users will complain loudly at being forced to click through a confirmation dialog every time they log out or reboot.

It would be much better to omit the confirmation dialogs permanently, than to permanently omit the ability to disable them.

This has been driving me crazy since updating to Karmic.

While some people strongly feel the need for confirmation dialogs, others feel strongly against. Therefor there needs to be an option to turn_on or turn_off such dialogs!

I found a solution! It is too hidden though, and should be made available with a simple right click like it was pre 9.10.

$ gconf-editor
> apps > indicator-session > check suppress_logout_restart_shutdown

This works for me.

I found this, but this preference seems to be ignored whether it's checked or unchecked.

> apps > gnome-session > options > uncheck logout_prompt

There is another problem: I'd like to hide my login name from the applet. It just eats space on the panel. I found no option to do that. No "Preferences" or something.

Same problem on my laptop. I would be very happy to hide completely the name and leave only the icon...

Hello,

I just installed Ubuntu 10.4 LTS, previously I was using 8.04 version, indicator-applet-session displays the short name of the user rather than the full name that would seem more logical and desirable, how to have the display of the full user name please?

I agree with #10. On the netbook edition this is just eating up valuable space. Its particularly annoying if you have no interest in that "social network" stuff at all. I'd be alright with it being just an icon.. but for me it can be removed/hidden completely as i see absolutely no use in changing my "status" nor any of the integration with any program that can do that.. In my opinion forcing something like this on a user is never good.. even if 90% of the users do like it.

in short.. hide and/or remove feature for the username/status thing please.

The last few comments were off-topic (asking for new features to control name display).
Please ignore those, they should have been posted to a new bug, not here.

The reported problem is a REGRESSION and is still present in 10.04 (the feature to control logout/reboot confirmation has been broken or removed).
