I have experienced the same situation as above, after setting up all my partitions: Root, Swap and Home.

Refer to bug #46876 also, which involves the RC-descktop
installation of Ubuntu version.
The same problem appears here in the System Installation, during language install.

The message asks you to report the bug refering you to
the launchpad net.

Workaround: don't use an XFS root filesystem. grub has trouble with that on many systems.

This band-aids around the problem a bit. It would obviously be nice to warn about this at the partman stage, though; I believe we have a bug report open about that for the alternate installer, and fixing that would address this too.

grub-installer (1.14ubuntu5) dapper; urgency=low

thanks for your workaround. I tried the installaion with the alternative
installer (the good old text version) and this time I had no trouble. My
hardware is:
Benq laptop Joybook 5100G:
Intel M with 1,7 GHz and 512 Mb RAM
60 GB HD, Ethernet on board, Centrion chip set with wlan g+ standard,
Ati mobility 9700 with 64MB RAM
the goal is three partions, one for the system and one for the users + swap
under XFS (what about reiserfs ?)

I hope this helps you a little bit to forge the drapper drake rock solid :-)

Otherwise I found the drapper RC worked better than SuSE 10.1 on this laptop!
keep going pls :-D

best regards,
Marcus

Creating a non-XFS /boot partition should work fine, and you can still use XFS for the rest of / if you like.

Hello Colin,
Here is some good news. I managed to install Ubuntu 6.06-rc-desktop on a
second try.
I created some free space on my hard disk where I have Windows 2K, and let
the system install automatically.
My previous attempt to partition the disk manually failed. I could not save
the report though.
It might be good advice to newbies to avoid using manual partitioning unless
they are absolutely sure they know what they are doing.
My installation was easy but kind of slow. The desktop CD is slower than
some other
live distributions I have tried.
I hope this will cheer you up a bit......Look Ma, no bugs!
Best regards, Don
