upstream changes:

2009-11-24 OProfile 0.9.6 released

OProfile 0.9.6 has been released. This is mainly a bug-fix release to correct some regressions that occurred in 0.9.5. It is highly recommended that all OProfile 0.9.5 users upgrade to 0.9.6. See the release notes for more details.

2009-07-31 OProfile 0.9.5 released

OProfile 0.9.5 has been released. This release includes a framework for extending the sample data files. See chapter 6, Extended Feature Interface, in the OProfile Internals manual. This release also includes support for several new processor models -- ARMv7, AMD family11h, IBM POWER7, Intel Atom, Intel Core i7 and Xeon 55xx (based on Nehalem core). Many other features and bug fixes are included, as well. See the release notes for more details.

Bringing oprofile 0.9.6 into Lucid is a good idea, I feel like this will solve more problems than it introduces. This version fixes many problems with profiling, including making it usable on 64bit machines (previous versions had a problem with a 32bit overflow, making profiling only useful on 32 bit machines).

I believe that we still need the postinst file that I proposed for merging here: https://code.edge.launchpad.net/~statik/ubuntu/lucid/oprofile/really-fix-jit-profiling/+merge/19925 in order to enable JIT profiling to work (this is needed by the team working on Unladen Swallow).

FFe granted.

Elliot, since you say an additional change is needed that's not in the Debian package, should I sync this now or do you want to prepare an upload of 0.9.6 with your fix?

Thank you Steve! I would be happy to prepare an upload on Thursday
(tomorrow), I'm just wrapping up at PyCon and about to get on a plane.
I am a bit uncertain about the correct way to prepare this upload with
bzr: I think we want lp:debian/sid/oprofile with a new changelog entry
and my postinst script that creates the needed oprofile user.

Would it be correct to go into a branch of lp:ubuntu/lucid/oprofile,
merge in lp:debian/sid/oprofile? What would be the correct way to
merge the changelog, should the previous ubuntu changelog entries be
preserved or thrown away?
