I am affected by this bug but I believe the title should read xrandr not randr

Adding the RandRRotation option in the Screen section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf allows rotation on my nvidia card.

Section "Screen"
    ...
    Option "RandRRotation" "True"

With RandRRotation enabled in xorg.conf, rotation works with xrandr but nvidia-settings crashes upon using rotation functionality. (see bug #740933)

I'm not sure exactly what the current status is of RANDR support in -nvidia is, but I believe it is still kind of a work in progress and rather new. It is possible this is simply not yet fully supported by the driver.

Not to say that the applet should crash when it's flipped on - it shouldn't. But the core issue of RANDR support needs solved upstream most likely.

Btw, the applet crash would be worth filing a new bug on if there isn't one filed already. (Include a full backtrace too).

Is this related in any way to bug 740933? There is a fix for that in natty-updates, can you try again with this version?

It does look like this bug should be fixed by that patch.
