Bug Description

Well maybe it is supported but I'm getting errors on my hardware. 6.06 or 6.06.1 won't boot after a HDD install from either a live or alternative disc.

6.06 and 6.06.1 live disc HDD install - messages at boot after an install:
ata1: translated ATA stat/err 0xd0/00 to SCSI SK/ASC/ASCQ 0xb/47/00
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 0
ALERT! /dev/sda3 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
BusyBox ... Built-in shell (ash)
#

6.06.1 text HDD install - messages at boot after an install:
buffer i/o error on device sda, logical block 0
...
driver sd needs updating please use bus_type methods

Edgy's kernel in 6.06.1 doesn't boot either - gets a kernel panic.

Edgy live disc after install to HDD and messages at boot:
PCI: BIOS Bug: MCFG area is not E820-reserved
PCI: Not using MMCONFIG
open: No such file or directory (constant spam during boot and shutdown)

I was able to login at GDM and apply all the updates. A bit better and decent if you can ignore the "open: No such file or directory" spam. Also direct rendering wasn't working but likely due to AIGLX.

lspci for the controller in Edgy Knot1 is:
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7 Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller IDE (rev 02)

In Knoppix 5.02 its:
0000:00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7 Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller IDE cc=IDE (rev 02)

Please clarify a little for me. I get this from your info so far:

1) Dapper doesn't work unless you specify acpi=off
2) Edgy works, but you get the messages noted (BTW, these aren't kernel related messages, and I believe they are already known).

Is this correct?

The following bug reports seem to be related in the fact that they are all receiving the same bios message either when choosing to start or install. The message is:

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task.

Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New".

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
