Bug Description

NET: Registered protocol family 16
EISA bus registered
ACPI: bus type pci registered
PCI: BIOS Bg: MCFG area is not E820-reserved
PCI: Not using MMCONFIG
PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.20 entry at 0xebfd6, last bus=63
Setting up standard PCI resources

ACPI: Interpreter enabled
ACPI: Using IOAPIC for interrupt routing

The following bug reports seem to be related in the fact that they are all receiving the same bios message either when choosing to start or install. The message is:

Trying to start Kubuntu Edgy Edge Knot 3 or Beta after I choose to start Kubuntu the first thing that comes up after "Loading Kernel" is:
PCI: BIOS Bug: MCFG area is not E820-reserved.
PCI: Not using MMCONFIG
The computer then hangs and fails to boot. I have tried the default option and the Graphics Safe Option. My hardware is as follows:

Motherboard: ASUS A8N32-SLI Delux, BIOS ver 1303
Chipset: nforce4
Processor: AMD 64 X2 4200
Memory: 2x1024 Corsair XMS 3500 LL Pro

Sound: Onboard RealTex AC '97 850
NIC: Onboard: 2xMarvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Monitor: ViewSonic P95f+

Also note the following:
1. I have confirmed this to also happen in 6.10 Beta (in addition to Knot 3).
2. This occurs with the 6.10 Beta x386 version
3. This occurs with the 6.10 Beta 64-bit version

It's working great now. The problem was that my SATA controller (ICH8) didn't work. That bug (#63516) has been fixed in the most recent daily builds.

I can confirm this. I managed to get a workaround by disabling VT (virtual technology) in BIOS. Message still exsist, so I don't think 'not booting' is releated to that message.

This happens to me only with Xen kernel.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report.
