Bug Description

Tested on Asus UL30VT with BIOS version 210, running Fedora 12

Changing the SATA operation mode in BIOS from "enhanced" to "compatible" completely disables the Intel card.

SATA mode set to "enhanced":

$ lspci -vnnn | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] (rev 07) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation Device [10de:0a74] (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

SATA mode set to "compatible"

$ lspci -vnnn | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation Device [10de:0a74] (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

Hi Pascal,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 575750

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jeremy,

I've posted this bug on Albert Vilella's advice, to keep a trace of the
related information.

Unfortunately, I can't test the dev release of Ubuntu, my laptop runs
Fedora, and I can't change
this for the moment... I'll test it as soon as possible.

All I can say is that the running kernel on my laptop is the Fedora
development release one,
based on the 2.6.34 version of the official Linux kernel. And the problem
related in the bug 575750
still occurs...

However, let me know if I can help by some (other) way!

Regards,

Pascal

Likely this is an upstream issue that wont get resolved without some specific DSDT or interrupt hackery targeted to this feature.....

Since this is currently the only(?) way to make use of the discrete nvidia gfx card on these machines, it would be nice to figure out what it is that causes the graphics output to switch, so it can be done at runtime, preferably without degrading disk performance

I have a UL30VT (BIOS version 210) and am running Lucid with kernel 2.6.35rc3 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35-rc3-maverick/ and the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) from the Ubuntu repos.

I can confirm that the Intel card remains disabled under "Compatible" mode.

Under "Compatible" mode lspci |grep VGA returns:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT218 [GeForce G210M] (rev a2)

Under "Enhanced" mode lspci |grep VGA returns:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT218 [GeForce G210M] (rev a2)

Running under "Compatible" mode appears to be the only way to operate the Nvidia GPU. Switching back to "Enhanced" mode with the NVIDIA driver activated requires that I boot into low graphics mode.

I can also confirm it under Lucid (mainline Kernel 2.6.34-020634-generic).

This BIOS setting has the same effect under windows7 - the Intel card disappears from the device manager.

So I guess this bug is a problem of the ASUS-provided BIOS ....
Unless there is some way of improving the performance of startup and suspend/resume to accomodate this setting.

Maybe the discussion about ways of making the nvidia card work should happen somewhere else, like <a href="

This is still a problem. We can activate the NVIDIA card only when SATA operation mode is set to Compatible. As it damages I/O performance more or less, I really don't wanna do that.

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
