Bug Description

Using Ubuntu upgrade to 10.04. Earlier version(9.x) worked, though sporadically.
The link below gives me a message that application/xml decoder is needed. Can't find one when search invoked. Universe and multiverse are enabled in Synaptic.

We have already tried a LOT of plugins. It is a very standard QuickTime format so if someone could change the title to "QuickTime not working in 10.04" then that would be helpful

QuickTime works fine in 10.04, both within and outside of Firefox.

What we need to do is workout how to get Firefox/Totem to detect and play this RTSP stream correctly. Or we may need some web evangelism to the USDA if the mimetype is not set correctly.

Hi

Their format worked fine in 9.10 and earlier releases. It is only a problem in 10.04.

Please be careful in contacting the people that run the website; they are doing great work but may not be technically brilliant. The danger is in pushing them into MicroSquish formats (which everyone can read, can't they?) rather than OpenSource which may require a little work on a Windows platform. I appreciate that MicroSquish answers involve paying a fee and the format becomes "out of date" fairly soon (when MicroSquish upgrade to new formats to force people into buying their latest products) but this sort of thing is not the perception of non-techies. I gave them the links to this thread and the thread in Answers

It worked fine before upgrading to 10.04 therefore the problem is with 10.04, not their site.

Good luck and regards from

luck with with those, either.

QuickTime seems a very standard format and it is only 10.04 users that are having this problem. Windows, Mac and other versions of linux can play this QuickTime stream very easily.

Is there anyway of testing QuickTime live-streaming on another website? Does anyone know a good test site to see if we have troubles there too?

For Lucid, solution to play Quicktime videos is:
-Close Firefox.
-Delete the plugins registry file. That should be in your ~/.mozilla/firefox/<profile (like xxxxxxxx.default)> folder, where ~/.mozilla is generally /home/<yourname>/.mozilla. Delete the file pluginreg.dat, which Firefox will recreate when it starts.
-Using Synaptic Package Manager, ensure that the multiverse repository is enabled.
-Remove the totem mozilla plugin named totem-mozilla.
-Install gecko-mediaplayer, which automatically installs all of the mplayer goodness as well.
PS I have vlc installed (for playing of DVDs as it's the only app that always works for that) but I do not have the vlc-mozilla-plugin package installed.

I just performed John's suggestions. Below is a copy of xsessions.error file. I did goofed up during John's fix by deleting the entire default folder. Opps!! I restored the folder and then deleted only the .dat file like he told me to. This miscue may be reflected in the sessions file, I don't know, cuz I can't interpret what this file says. I also note that these 2 lines are still present:
"unable to find rmda in /home/barry/.cache/gnome-mplayer/plugin/gecko-mediaplayerbjduni

unable to find mmdr in /home/barry/.cache/gnome-mplayer/plugin/gecko-mediaplayerbjduni"

I still don't have any idea if this is relevant or not.

Here's the error file:

I am trying to move my wife away from windows and into a Ubuntu distro. This web cam is less than 60 mikes from our home and she enjoys watching the wildlife shown on it. I think it will be a deal breaker if I can't find a way for her to view it.

I am using ubuntu 10.04 also and FF 3.6.3.

Any other thoughts?

Hi :)

As a work-around until this gets fixed i would suggest either having a dual-boot with an earlier version of Ubuntu, (perhaps the 8.04 is easier to find to download?) or to use VirtualBox (or some other virtual machine) to install an earlier version inside your current install.

If you are trying to move someone away from Windows then it is always best to start with a dual-boot (with Windows) so that the person can go back into Windows whenever they like and just adapt gradually. At first they will probably stay in Windows all the time but eventually they find Ubuntu faster for almost everything. If your wife has a separate machine then obviously use 8.04 rather than 10.04 until this issue is resolved.

Any new install of Ubuntu needs this page for sorting the multimedia
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Most people new to Ubuntu appreciate this link for guidance
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows
perhaps this one for humour and to understand the ethics/philosophy a little better
http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm

I hope something here helps but also i hope this issue does get resolved soon. I haven't tried John's answer but 2 people have so far said ti doesn't work so i suspect i probably wont have any luck with this either

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Do you know if a fix is being developed? If so maybe I will wait for it's release if I knew when it might be available.

I know about the Medibuntu installation.

I had already planed on a duel boot configuration for her first go-round. I use Ubuntu on our travel machine so she is not totally new to it.

Hi :)

I wouldn't wait for the fix to be developed as it is impossible to say even whether anyone is working on this or even interested in working on it. On the other hand an alpha or beta release of a patch might get posted to this thread tomorrow. It is just impossible to guess.

Given Murphy's Law it would be better to go with the assumption that it might take a long time for an effective patch or answer to ease tension. Most developers don't get paid for their work so they are driven by factors that are unusual in the present day. Installing a 9.10 or 8.04 is smart because those are the releases that still have 1 years support and the install doesn't really take that long once you have had practice.

You are welcome for the links and things, hopefully they might help other people looking through this thread.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Thanks for the kind words Tom.

I know the people that can fix this issue are not on staff with a good salary so I do appreciate and applaud everything they do.

The Ubuntu release 10.04 is a LTS release so I would think the powers that be would like everything working properly. I hope. <g>

Thanks again. Bob.

Well, I use 9.10 for my main system.. 10.04 is on my test box, but won't
move to 10.04 until all my stuff checks out. Keep in mind that even with
9.10, connection is spotty. I have a third box which I use for my
electronic development work. It is also 9.10, but this box has a virtual
server, with XP inside it. A number of applications that I use for
technical work requires a Windows platform, but I don't like having Windows
exposed to the internet on my development box, I use Linux to shield
Windows. Maybe you could do a virtual box to keep the wife happy and still
be in a Linux environment. I use Sun's (opps, Oracles) virtual software.

I think it better if she could use the OS as one and not think about two OS's on one box.

I seem to remember Xp was a really badly broken system when it was first released, and then Service Pack 1 made things worse but SP2 finally settled a lot of issues and SP3 was a more than most people needed. Ubuntu 10.04 has not had it's 10.04.1 release yet and this might iron out a few issues for a lot of people. This will arrive through normal updates for those of us already using 10.04

This is a major issue for many people and a format that is widely used.

We can't just skip the sites that use this for their video choice. That's not what the WEB is useful for.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=622022
and if you are not already registered there as well as at Launchpad then please register there quite soon if you can. It is one of the few really important sites to register at if you use Ubuntu. It covers a lot of packages upstream.

Note that upgrading your Totem to 2.30.2 is helpful if you want to give feedback to that site. Note the main/only developer for Totem gets a lot of unnecessary criticism from a lot of people but does an excellent job so please go easy on him as he has probably not been made aware of this bug until now!

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

What is needed to change that status from "Incomplete"?

I think Bastien will change it now that we have verified that the bug exists with totem 2.30.2.

HI, is html5 relevant in all this? I keep hearing about html5 but am clueless about it. Anyone got a good brief about it?

Excellent question Tom. The short answer is that HTML5 is not relevant to this bug.

While there are many aspects to HTML5, the one you are probably thinking about is the new <video> element. This enables video to be directly embedded in a web page and played back by any web browser which supports the HTML5 <video> element, without the need for a third party player plugin such as Flash or Quicktime or Totem. See https://developer.mozilla.org/En/HTML/Element/Video and http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/06/html5-video-fallbacks-markup/ for more information. That's basically it, but there is a bit more to it - the web browser has to support the codec that the video is encoded in (something which is discussed in the second link in the previous sentence). This is where Google's new WebM format comes in - it is a strict subset of the popular Matroska (.mkv) format and uses Google's new VP8 video codec and the ogg vorbis audio codec. YouTube has had a HTML5 beta option available for a while now - they launched it prior to the announcement of WebM and have recently added WebM support. You can read more (and then try it out if you wish) at http://www.youtube.com/html5

Firefox 3.6 only supports HTML5 video in the Ogg Theora format. The latest Firefox nightly builds (available from http://nightly.mozilla.org/webm/ ) also support HTML5 video in the WebM format.

However the video in the web page that this bug is concerned with is not using the HTML5 <video> element.

You should be able to select "copy" and open that with the normal totem program (outside the browser), it will show all green.
There is also a problem viewing this in mac os, it shows up all green for awhile, then it shows the picture. I think this may be a server side problem.

Quicktime gives this info about that stream:
Source: rtsp://ph.h264.live02.pscdn.net/003/02411/live1/eagle
Format: MPEG4 Video, 256 x 192, Millions
AAC, Mono, 24.000 kHz
Normal size: 256 x 192 pixels
Current size: 691 x 519 pixels
Bit rate: (number keeps changing, 120-200 kbit/s)
Quality: 100.00%

Apparently this live format isn't yet supported by totem or vlc?

@NoBugs! - The green video is a known issue on Lucid - see comment 19 (in the context of comment 1). It works with updated gstreamer packages - see comment 25.

I've just tested it on Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" alpha2, updated to the latest gstreamer packages (without any PPA's) and can report that it works!

Uname: Linux 2.6.35-6-generic i686
Package Versions: totem 2.30.2-2ubuntu2
                              libgstreamer0.10-0 0.10.30-1
                              gstreamer0.10-plugins-base 0.10.30-1
                              gstreamer0.10-plugins-good 0.10.24-1ubuntu1
                              gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse 0.10.18-0ubuntu1
                              gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly 0.10.15-1
                              gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg 0.10.11-1

Opening the webpage http://www.fs.fed.us/outdoors/naturewatch/eaglecam.html mentioned in the original bug description is still giving the error originally reported.

I'm also thinking that the error originally reported might be a server side problem - see the last sentence in comment #4.

WoooHooo. So 'upgrading' to the alpha test version before it gets released seems
to be an answer! :)) Superb :)

Normally i would say take great care about this sort of thing.  Perhaps install
the alpha as an addition to your dual/multi-boot so that you can keep using the
existing one when you fiond something doesn't work in the alpha/beta.  In linux
that is easy, just add a small partition and away it goes.  In Windows you
really don't have good options without delving into re-coding their
boot-loader.  Ours does it automatically :))

If this is 'just a server side problem' then could we agree on how to present
them a better way of presenting this?  At the moment they are not very
technically minded and just use the defaults from the kit they are using.  I did
contact them once a while ago but would recommend caution in contacting them in
the future as they are really good people but might get scared off by anything
too complicated.  Potentially they might one day, a far off day, be potential
linux users so lets try to avoid scaring them.
