Volumeid segfaults in postinst on upgrade to edgy from dapper

Bug Description

Steps Taken:
1) Fresh install of dapper on laptop
2) update manager to get up to date
3) sudo "update-manager -d", choosing to upgrade to edgy
4) Wait.
5) update-manager says the following
"The upgrade aborts now. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist/upgrade" in the bug report

It ran for some more time, and after a reboot (new kernel) and several "sudo aptitude dist-upgrade", the system has been running for a few minutes.

I have previously tried booting the edgy live-CD knot 2 but the boot process stops without error message at the "configuring X" step. I now wanted to do an edgy install via dapper.

My computer is a Compaq laptop in the Presario V5000 series with a Swedish keyboard layout and a sempron processor.

I have the files from the /var/log/dist-upgrade directory, as well as a screen shot of the message, but do not know how to attach them to the bug-report.

Thanks for your bugreport.

Can you please also include the other file /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log ?

Thanks,
 Michael

Thanks for the logfiles.

This looks like it is closely releated to bug #60278 (update-initramfs problem).

Cheers,
 Michael

I can't install the ssh server so it's hard to copy and paste the results here, but I've also encountered this. Due to problems I'm having with a CD drive, I can't install edgy, but dapper installs fine. I think the CD drive isn't perfect.

Anyway, I'll type in what I can see. This is upgrading from a pristine dapper server install to edgy.

   Try "mv /etc/mkinitrd/modules /etc/mkinitrd/modules.bak && apt-get install -f" - worked for me.

edgy and dapper are no longer supported. If this happens when upgrading to a currently supported release, please reopen.
