Bug Description

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)

At least with this video card, usplash does not show any graphics at all. On boot I see some error messages scrolling by very fast (in text mode). This happens since the switch to svgalib.

(Not many details here, the issue is well known and has been attempted to be debugged; allegedly it's a problem with the real-mode emulation code).

during boot, I just see a black screen. Then, immediately before X starts, I see some error messages, I took a screenshot.

I can confirm this bug on the following hardware:

AMD64 2800+ (Socket 754)
nVidia 6600 GT (AGP)

Ubuntu Version: edgy-desktop-amd64.iso (knot2)
(Used as a live environment)

Booting from the CD works,
but no splash screen on startup or shutdown.

PS: Works fine with knot1

Follow-Up:
Tested with knot3, still no splash

Will try: knot3 (i386) and re-try knot1 (amd64)

Test Results:

knot3 (i386) == OK (ubuntu logo)
knot1 (amd64) == OK (looks like VGA or TV test signal, as expected)

knot2 (amd64) = FAILED (blinking underscore)
knot3 (amd64) = FAILED (blinking underscore)

This is just a "me-too". It does work with "save graphics mode" though. I set it to milestone "6.10-beta" because it is a regression that affects a lot of users.

I've got this issue as well, as I've reported as #61711, boot splash is not shown, only the blinking cursor, and it's quite long time to reach start of gdm, very slow! Just before starting gdm by upstart, I can even log in with getty, and I see 99% CPU usage of usplash. Booting with kernel parameters 'nosplash and noquiet' makes booting fast again, though not boot slash is shown in this case of course ...

Linux oxygene 2.6.17-8-generic #2 SMP Tue Sep 19 08:53:32 UTC 2006 x86_64 GNU/Linux

It's up-to-date edgy (daily dist-uprade'd) on an AMD64 with nvidia card

Marked this as a duplicate of bug #56587, instead of the other way around, because more progress seems to have been made on the other report.
