Firefox will not start under Dapper 6.06

Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

After upgrading to 6.06, Firefox will not start at all. Whenever I start it, the cursor changes to the "sandclock" for approx. 30s and then reverts back to normal, but no Firefox.
I first found out that it was unable to find 3 of its libraries: libmozjs.so, libxpcom.so and libxpcom_core.so. I couldn't find any fault with the firefox startup script, but somehow it was simply unable to see the libraries, so I simply copied them into a path where they could be found. I checked the results with ldd and all looked find.
However, it still doesn't start.
I tried to follow the instructions on how to get a stack trace, but it doesn't crash, it simply exits with code 1. No further information could be found.

What ubuntu version are you running? Find this by issuing 'dpkg -l mozilla-browser|grep ^ii' (without the quotes) at a command prompt. If that fails, try 'dpkg -l mozilla-firefox|grep ^ii' and post the output here.

I presume that -l actually means -I (for Info). The output is the same for mozilla-browser, mozilla-firefox and firefox:
dpkg-deb: failed to read archive `mozilla-browser': No such file or directory
dpkg-deb: failed to read archive `mozilla-firefox': No such file or directory
dpkg-deb: failed to read archive `firefox': No such file or directory

firefox was installed using synaptic (and it was then uninstalled and re-installed, using apt-get).

I noticed that I get exactly the same for whatever package name I enter.
The version given in synaptic is 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.5-0ubuntu6.06-1

After reading the man pages for dpkg, I realize that the -l option does exist, it was simply the grep that didn't find anything. Here is the output:

I've got 1.7.12-1.1ubuntu2 for mozilla-browser here. You don't seem to have that installed. Please 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install mozilla-browser' and tell us if that fixes it?

Thanks,

Yes, nothing has changed. I have so far not upgraded to 6.10, so let me know
what tests you want me to run and I will provide the data.

Hi John,

Tried that already, no difference.
Is it possible that firefox doesn't like the /usr/lib/ path being on a link?
I ran out of space and had to move the whole lot to another partition.

Best regards,

Wolfgang Schulze-Zachau

No, I still get the same response. After I enter the command, the console says:

Please be sure that there are no firefox processes running after
upgrade. In case you don't know how, just restart your system.

Alexander asked me to check that there are no other firefox processes running. I ran this command:
ps aux | grep fire
and the result is:
root 3409 0.0 0.1 2892 820 pts/1 S+ 20:00 0:00 grep fire
which indicates that there are no other firefox processes running.

Firefox doesn't start under gutsy, too.
The following error happens most of time:

The program 'firefox-bin' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 1324 error_code 3 request_code 20 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

See if that gives a better error that can help us more, Please remove any extenstions that you have installed and see if this issue goes away. What graphics card do you have and what drivers are you using?
