Bug Description

Binary package hint: hal

The version of hal in breezy (0.5.3) is missing a patch that is needed for hald to run on a 2.6.18 kernel. It fixes a bug in how hald deals with the sysfs tree. Without it, a change in 2.6.18 results in hald failing to start up successfully. The patch has been in hal for a long time now (since November 2005), and i've verified that adding it to 0.5.3-0ubuntu14 gets things working again.

I've attached a copy of the patch with the path info at the top altered to work in the dpkg-buildpackage process.

You will probably find several other things in Breezy that do not work with 2.6.18. 2.6.15 had a completely overhauled hotplug architecture, thus needs a matching udev, etc. pp. This patch is not the type of thing we fix in stable releases, since it is not a high-impact/data-loss/security bug, nor can it be guaranteed that the patch does not induce any regressions when using the standard breezy kernel.
