Bug Description

After the last update in the Edgy repositories, including the 2.6.17-10-generic, I cannot run most of my programs.

gedit, gnome-calculator, mplayer, gxine, amule, nibbles... all of them, when I try to run them I got a segfault.

Probably the last upgrades in Edgy crashed some stuff. I consider this an urgent issue.

Hmm, apport-gtk crashing, very strange. However, this cannot be the only reason why other programs crash as well. Can you please do

  sudoedit /etc/default/apport

set 'enabled=0' there, and then reboot your machine? Do the other apps like gedit still crash?

Also, if you boot with the previous kernel, does the system work normally again? (Choose 'previous' in the grub boot menu)

After I rebooted AGAIN the system no crash happens. All applications are working properly. I'm unable to reproduce the problem again.

I'll try to stress the system in other to make it crash again, to make apport run and see if all apps stops working as happened.

Thansk for the quick replies.

Hello gentlemen,

It happened again. I was just browsing over the web thru Firefox with Gaim and Xchat opened. Suddenly, I got a high CPU usage and thru the top command I could detect that apport was running.

When apport closed, I've noticed that Firefox was closed. When I tried to reopen Firefox, I got a segfault/core dump.

I pressed CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to refresh Xorg and GDM opened perfectly. I entered my login and password and the Ubuntu splash appeared, then the system stoped. No apps opened after that, even gnome-panel. I belive they were all getting segfault.

I rebooted my computer and now it seems to be working fine. I'm writing this comment thru Firefox.

This seems to be a very serious problem, since it produces a strong crash system and cannot be easily reproduced.

Ah, no applications opening after you login again in gdm might have an entirely different reason: there might be still processes running from your desktop session after logging out.

If you get this situation again (firefox crash, for example), can you please do:

 - press ctrl+alt+f1, log in, do

     ps ux > stale-processes.txt

 - press alt+f7, try to log into gdm, verify that it hangs, press ctrl+alt+backspace

 - press ctrl+alt+f1, do

    kill -9 -1

 - verify that 'ps ux' only shows two processes ('bash' and 'ps -ux')

 - press alt+f7, log in again and check whether it works

Thank you!
