xmaxima is broken and maxima is outdated

Bug Description
xmaxima in Ubuntu (dapper) is broken: it hangs once you try to evaluate any expression. Moreover maxima is outdated. The latest maxima (5.9.10) and corresponding xmaxima can be easily compiled for ubuntu.

This is a duplicate of bug #43150. We are trying to fix the xmaxima (and other maxima frontend) problem. We don't provide the newer packages for Dapper unless they are fixing security or major bugs. If you really want a newer maxima you could file a dapper-backports bug.
