Binary package hint: kubuntu-
I have all the desktop meta packages installed (ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop), and therefore the respective *artwork-usplash are installed as well.
I would like to keep the ubuntu usplash, but it reverts to kubuntu everytime kubuntu-

Yes that's known issue.
In fact we had a problem with kubuntu usplash since the name has changed and people couldn't get the new alternative since it is on manual mode for several people.
This way to force it is to unsure they get the new one.
Imbrandon is currently working on this to make it more convenient, and avoid the need to force everything to get it updated.
