untranslated strings included in POs

Bug Description

Files downloaded from Rosetta include the untranslated strings which apparently is a bug. This greatly increases the size of the downloaded files among other issues.

See this link which shows the issue in the PO files for blender.

If I am understanding correctly, this is expected behaviour.

It's quite common for someone to download untranslated or partially translated PO file, update it locally and submit it as completed translation (as a matter of fact, that's one of original use cases for downloadable PO files). That's also the reason why it's common to ship partially translated PO files (so those who use the software can know what parts of translation are missing, and are able to update it right away).

Binary releases/packages don't have this problem since MO files )binary files gotten from PO files using msgfmt tool) don't contain untranslated entries, so size of binary packages is not increased.

If I am mistaken, please reopen.

Hi,

I could be mistaken, I filled the report in response to an email I recieved based on an inquiry,

here is my initial inquiry

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-translators/2006-September/000828.html

and here is the response that prompted the bug report (oddly the archive doesn't have it even though it was CCed to the list... changed @ to AT for spam prevention...)

I've also attached a sample .po files that I am unable to merge so that the difference can be seen between what is in Ubuntu and what is in Blender CVS.

http://blender.blogchina.com/inc/blender.zh_cn.rar

If it is not a bug, could you direct me to someone who might be able to help me? I am the maintainer of Blenders translations in CVS and the idea of duplicated efforts regarding translations is undesirable :)

which is a bug.

This actually matters. Think of people who, for instance, have Catalan
as their first language, typically also speak Spanish/Castillian, and
don't know English too well.

They want to see the Spanish texts if there's no Catalan version
available, not the English stuff.

This is actually what will happen even if PO files contain untranslated entries (and with proper LANG/LANGUAGE setup), and your blender.po file from the above is just as it should be.

And you can simply get only translated ones using "msgattrib --translated blender.po" (maybe even using --no-obsolete as well).

Now, you may have problems merging this using msgfmt (eg. maybe because of fuzzies appearing in upstream PO files), and I'd love to help, but I suppose this is better handled on ubuntu-translators list instead (a quick hint: try to use "-C translation-from-rosetta.po" parameter to msgmerge when doing the merge).

(Note: both msgmerge and msgattrib are part of gettext-tools)
