Bug Description

Binary package hint: usplash

Desktop CD PPC shows usplash theme with no issues but the background dissappearing while loading system. Just the progression bar is visible after loading certain modules.

Installing from Desktop CD is not possible as Gparted does not allow a botstrap Apple partition. -> installation from Alternate ppc CD.

Installing from Alternate PPC CD in either mode "install" or "install-powerpc" produces the same result once system is installed:

1- Once yaboot selects linux as startup system there is no usplash theme as was in the Desktop CD. The startup mode is text, but does not show all the loading modules and the [ok] [fail] tags.
2- The screen remains black until GDM login screen appears.
3- Installation is just the standard install. No apps added, no config files modified. I'm typing right now from the machine and have not added any app, nor modified any config file.
4- Shutdown usplash does not show either while with Desktop CD PPC it did show up.

So the uplash is there just no text scrolling?

Nope, The usplash does not appear at all. the underscorecursor blinks on
the top-left of the screen and the rest of the screen keeps blank until
gdm login appears.

This issue I've solved by doing the following:

1- Use the alternate edgy beta powerpc CD to partitionate hard drive
with this I can get the partition for yaboot botstrap which can not
be created by Gparted.
2- as installing with the alternate CD produces those issues like no
usplash, no sound, then I use Desktop Edgy beta powerpc CD to install
again erasin the content of the partitions created by the alternate CD
but NOT TOUCHING any partition.

so there must be an issue with the contents of alternate and desktop
that makes both a bit tricky. A mix of them both should be the final
release. ;)

With these I get sound and usplash working properly. Wired network needs
to be tweaked by editing manually the file "/etc/network/interfaces".

Now I'm dealing with wireles, bluetooth and video out.

Thanks for your time.

Can you test this on the Edgy beta and also post the printout of:

cat /proc/cpuinfo

This will give us information on your specific model of PowerBook

Please don't file multiple issues in a single bug report; it makes it difficult to track them and mark them properly. Your desktop CD installer bug is bug 43768 (and bug 66384, etc.), and should be fixed in the Edgy release candidate.

If the desktop CD gave you a working usplash but the alternate install CD didn't, then this would be the known bug in the Edgy beta that the alternate install CD didn't produce a correct /etc/usplash.conf due to tricky issues in installation ordering; this is fixed in the Edgy release candidate. Laurent's issue is probably something else and should be filed separately.

Hello Colin,

My apologies for mixing the two bugs. I was ill when answered both, so I
did it to leave the computer as soon as possible. Did not mean to harden
the process of solving the issue. From now on I won't forget this, and
follow the standard process.
Best Regards.
