This particular bug is one that I've been having some difficulty tracking down, and I'd appreciate your help. Could you please boot the same CD afresh and run the following command in a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal; make sure to type this exactly as printed):

  sudo env UBIQUITY_DEBUG=1 ubiquity >/tmp/ubiquity.log 2>&1

Now run through the installer as normal, except make sure to use a dummy password such as "password", as the password will show up in the debugging log and you shouldn't expose your real password that way. Assuming you encounter the same problem, please start a web browser directly on the live CD, go to this bug report, and attach the files "/tmp/ubiquity.log" and "/var/log/syslog".

Thanks in advance!

Oh dear. I would be glad to help, but I was in such a pinch that I downloaded the alt cd and was able to install using it. (I tried dapper live and alt cd and both would lock up; I could only get ubuntu installed on this system using Edgy's alt cd). I've got my system set up now.

Do you think the bug is related to the sata harddrive? If not, could I use an external and install Ubuntu to it? If I install grub to the external harddrive, would it mess up my current ubuntu and grub installation?

Alan

I don't yet know what it's related to. It may well be hardware-specific in some way.

OK, we found it, and it's fixed in current Edgy. See bug 62939 for more details.
