Bug Description

Binary package hint: kde-guidance-powermanager

The new KDE power manager applet isn't configurable, if you click on the applet a setting window pops-up but the whole settings are greyed.

What kind of infos do you want? I don't know what are the configuration files of this applet since it's new. Just it doesn't work out of the box, I can see a setting window when I click upon the applet with left button, but all the options aren't choosable. I just upgrade kde-guidance-powermanager yesterday and before it worked almost well.

Moreover, power manager doesn't distinguish if the AC is plugged or not, but shows always a fully charged battery (AC within and without).

I can say for sure that powernowd, acpid, dbus, hald daemons are running, or so they seem.

I am not a dev, but have you tried to reinstall the kde-guidance package?

From what I can tell, the powermanager does not recognise that you are using a laptop.

I am subscribing the laptop team.

Of course, I did, unfortunately without success. I tried to reconfigure
and to reinstall, too. Generally I consider bug reporting the 'extrema
ratio'.

Well, it seems it's recognizing I have a fully charged never plugged to
AC laptop, and that's not true. Moreover I can't configure it.

OK, many thanks!

Can you attach output of "lshal" command?
Please provide also output of "cat /var/lib/acpi-support/system-*"

Sure!

As you can see, I own a Asus M67Neuh laptop, Centrino 1.6 GHz. Up to now acpi states and frequency scaling were always well supported by (K)Ubuntu.

I add one more thing: when lid is closed the laptop doesn't suspend.

You can read bug #64646 too, though it's about a little bit different matter.

Thanks!

Your laptop does not provide LID support through HAL - there should be one button reported as type "lid". This is explains why "When laptop lid closed" part is shaded.

There is also no battery reported, so this explains why the other part is shaded as well.

I think this is caused either by ACPI implementation or it is HAL bug. We cannot do much in power-manager unless HAL properly reports battery and lid.

So, using this power manager, I will never get my laptop suspended by
lid closing...

You're telling me HAL is still buggy or incomplete, right?

Yes, it looks like HAL bug, as kernel does seem to report properly in /proc/acpi the battery and lid, but they do not get listed in HAL.
Changing package to hal.

I forgot to say that, before that update, don't remember exactly the
date, but I suppose untill september the 7th or 8th, KDE power manager
worked almost well, except for the setting of screen brightness (when
KDE started it set brightness to 60-70% even when AC was plugged). So I
suppose HAL worked well with my laptop, since I could suspend it by lid
closing; is it possible a regression of HAL? When was it updated the
last time? Could it be still probable a regression of power-manager?

Power-manager only present stuff reported by HAL, and lshal does not report battery and lid. /proc/acpi has entries for battery and lid, so I suspect kernel is presenting them to userspace, this is why I think HAL is the prime suspect, but it can also be the kernel reporting some state differently and breaking HAL as a side effect.

We recently got a report about hal not reporting any battery nor lid on the
ASUSTeK M6Ne, although the kernel reports them in /proc/acpi/.

The Ubuntu bug has the /proc/acpi contents and lshal output. Do you need any
further debug info?

Thank you!

I'm registered to launchpad, so I ask here for the info:

Please provide:
* output of hal from /var/log/messages started with --daemon=yes --verbose=yes -
-use-syslog
* start acpi_listen and press the lidclose button and also remove AC adapter
and post the output here.

Please get a hal debug output, as described on the second half of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingRemovableDevices, and attach the log here.

Also, please open a shell, start 'acpi_listen', press the power button, and copy & paste the resulting output here. Thank you!
