Bug Description

Seen in a friend's attempt to install dapper; the aptitude command being run was "aptitude -q --without-recommends -y install '~t^ubuntu-standard$|~t^ubuntu-desktop$'":

aptitude then proceeded to silently fail to install those packages and everything that depended on them, which left my friend with an apparently successful install but no gdm. It should possibly have retried the download, and should definitely have failed when it could not download all the items it determined were part of the requested pattern.
