Post installation, sound gets disabled. MP3 files cannot be played and system needs retart

Bug Description

Binary package hint: apt

After performing any installation of any package using apt-get install or using the Synaptic installer, Ubuntu does not force a restart. Howeverit should do so because changes to the configuration leaves the system quite unstable.

After installation of any package, for example MP3 files cannot be played, MPEG failes can't be watched and the audio hardware is undetected. One needs to restart the machine to get his audio device running fine.

Thanks for your bugreport.

There is usually no need to restart the machine after installing a package. Its very strange that sound stops working for you. So just to be clear: before you run e.g.:
$ sudo apt-get install 3dchess
all works fine (you can listen to music etc). But after that that is no longer possible?

Hi Michael,

That is correct. I use the following way:

At this point all MP3 files can be played and everything works fine.

apt-cache search <string>
returns a package list.
apt-show-versions <package name>
if not installed and if i want to have it,
apt-get install <package name>

The package installs fine. But if you play an MP3 file using XMMS player, it
does not play the music. In fact the player simply moves over all the files
in the playlist and does not play any of them.
