Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-27-686

On resume from suspend-to-ram, fan always on. If temperature is below 55C (almost always), fan never shuts off. If temperature subsequently rises rises above 55C (cpu power used, due to ambient heat, etc), then drops below 55C, the fan shuts off.
Apparently the thermal module only reacting to trip points without regard to actual current state.

Computer: Toshiba A100-SK8 (Phoenix BIOS)
running Dapper

I have the same issue using linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic on Edgy. I am running on a Gateway 450 laptop.

I fixed the problem by placing the attached script in /etc/acpi/resume.d/99-turn-fan-off.sh

Thanks very much, but I returned that computer and got another. Anyway, the script would not have worked because there was no acpi fan control in that bios.

Thanks again...

yeah, i have the same problem in Gutsy Gibbon. it's annoying and is the one thing that makes me boot to windows. I don't know if my laptop acts in the same way with the certain temperatures but the fan comes on and won't shut off; happens after every suspend and resume. Toshiba Satellite m115-s3094

The problem still exists in Ubuntu 9.04 - Jaunty Jackalope with a HP Compaq 6735s notebook.

The fan can be manually silenced via:
echo 3 > /proc/acpi/fan/FAN3/state

but somehow, the modified script (FAN3 required here) from above isn't executed when put in /etc/acpi/resume.d/99-turn-off-fan.sh.

As per your request, I've captured the ACPI debugging information.

linux-source-2.6.15 task should be invalid because there is no 2.6.15 kernel in Ubuntu 9.04.
That's why I've opened a new Linux task.

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
