Mustek 1200UB Plus causes Xsane Image scanner to crash

Bug Description

Plug in Mustek 1200UB Plus scanner, start XSane, get error
Failed to open device gt68xx:libusb:001:003 Invalid argument

Shows up in lsusb as :

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 05d8:4002 Ultima Electronics Corp. Artec Ultima 2000 (GT6801 based)/Lifetec LT9385 Scanner

That scanner requires proprietary firmware in order to work, which is why it doesn't work out of the box. On the positive side, once you do set it up, it is 100% functional. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=24087 for details.

Apart from that, did xsane actually crash or did it just pop up that error and then quit (which, although it may confusing, is not a crash)?

Mustek 1200ub plus relies on a firmware that is currently not included.
firmware is called sbfw.usb and it goes in /usr/share/sane/gt68xx
You can get it from
http://www.meier-geinitz.de/sane/gt68xx-backend/

Also sane misidentifies the 1200ub plus calls it a bearclaw 1200cu
need to edit file /etc/sane.d/gt68xx.conf
you need to change change

# Mustek ScanExpress 1200 UB Plus:
#override "mustek-scanexpress-1200-ub-plus"

to

# Mustek ScanExpress 1200 UB Plus:
override "mustek-scanexpress-1200-ub-plus"

worked for me afterwards

This was the first time in several weeks of searching that I came across a solution that actually worked.
