Elliot thanks for your info, could you tell me at what step and what percentage the installer failed?

It failed directly after giving the 'installation successful' message,
at 100% installation, which was odd. The installation seems to work
properly, however.

Thanks a pretty nice report! Setting to unconfirmed, since there is no more info requested.

I am NOT the expert here, but I did see Colin say in similar situation:
"Thanks for your report. This particular error is often due to a faulty
CD/DVD disk or drive. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the
CD/DVD at a lower speed, or to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning
kits are often available from electronics suppliers)."
But you should wait the opinion of the expert.

As Paul said. I'm afraid there isn't much the installer can sanely do against critical bits of itself like debconf suddenly failing, as at that point it might even be unable to display error messages ...

Your installation will probably be basically OK except that console-setup might not be configured properly, which could cause questions to be asked on future upgrades. You can make it ask you those questions now instead by running 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup' in a terminal, which will fix it up.
