Bug Description

I was running fine on ubuntu 10.04 and decided to take the plunge and upgrade to ubuntu 10.10.

Ever since I have upgraded, I am getting a screen flicker every 6-7 seconds. This is MOST annoying.

I have tried installing the AMD proprietary video driver and using the default driver.

Both have the same problem:

mike@ubuntu:~$ sudo lshw -C display

Can someone please help me?

If not, is there a way to go back to 10.04 without doing a complete re-install?

Thanks,
Mike

Sorry, that info is no longer available...

I did not hear back for such a long time, I figured I was being blown off.

I have since downgraded to 10.04 to fix the problem on my system.

Sincerely,
Mike

I also have this problem. I could get around it by running a previous kernel from the grub list, but since updating today to the latest kernel I can't do this any more because it refuses to boot up the previous kernel (now 6 down the list).

It's very depressing that this is taking so long to fix.

I tried turning off Compiz, but that didn't help. This is very erratic for me, the only pattern I can see is that if I leave the computer alone for a minute or so, it will definitely flicker and go dimmer when I hit a key or move the mouse, then maybe flicker again and regain it's usual brightness. I just turned off "Dim display when idle" in System -> Power Management, and it made the screen flicker and go darker! Very weird. I think I should consider using an older kernel, or maybe a development kernel.

mike disante, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg <replace-with-bug-number>
