Does this also happen when it is being run from a live-CD of Maverick, or only on your installed version of Ubuntu?

Okay, thanks. This is likely related to the inability to open the mixer.

[ 15.080071] hda_codec: num_steps = 0 for NID=0xc (ctl = Front Playback Volume)
[ 15.110071] hda_codec: num_steps = 0 for NID=0xc (ctl = Front Playback Volume)
[ 15.140065] hda_codec: num_steps = 0 for NID=0xc (ctl = Front Playback Volume)

It should be fixed but I won't have time to have a closer look this week.
You might be able to work around it by trying different model= parameters in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.

Found fix,

in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, add

options snd-hda-intel model=generic

but I do not like, I can not use the other channels.

Waiting for a real solution

Thanks.

Please remove model=generic, the latest alsa driver modules (if installed), then install http://people.canonical.com/~diwic/temp/alsa-hda-diwic-alc887-mixer-dkms_1.0.23.diwic_all.deb - reboot and report back if it works for you or not. Thanks!

@zeis, ok, thanks for testing. That alsamixer is working seems to be a step in the right direction, at least. With the new dkms package installed, could you attach an https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo ? Thanks!

@Raymond, you're likely having different hardware, so please file a separate bug for your issue. Thanks!

@zeis, now that you can run alsamixer (use the "alsamixer" terminal command), you can use that to turn your volumes up, and to select input source, in case gnome-volume-control doesn't do that correctly for you. You need to turn up "front mic" and "front mic boost", e g (or "rear mic", if that is what you use).

Front mic set to zero and the rear to 33 and worked the first time, the restart was lost forever the microphone.

Thanks.
