Bug Description

Installed Edgy RC 1. Installed msttcorefonts. Under Preferences/Fonts, set various app and window fonts to Arial, Smoothing to None, and Hinting to Slight. (This gives me results in every other app that are equivalent to the sharpness you get in Windows, which I prefer). This combination works perfectly in OpenOffice Dapper (MS fonts display crisp and well formed, as in Windows). In Edgy, it looks like no hinting is applied by OpenOffice, so fonts are blocky looking. (I will attach a screen shot, below.)

This screen shot shows just what I am talking about. The fonts in Firefox are crisp and clear. In OpenOffice they are blocky and almost illegible. This has always been an issue in Edgy, it is not an issue in Dapper.

By the way, the OpenOffice option to use "screen font antialiasing" (under Tools/Options/OpenOffice.org/View) makes no difference in the font display quality.

I don't see this effect; anything you changed in /etc/fonts? please could you recheck with a current live CD?

I can confirm that font rendering for OpenOffice in Edgy is completely ugly. This seems to be an inherited bug from Debian, see

http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-openoffice%40lists.debian.org/msg11965.html

While in Debian Etch at least antialiasing is somewhat working in OpenOffice, which makes fonts not a complete pain in the eyes (but it's very close to - damn unsharp), not even antialiasing seems to work for OpenOffice in Edgy (completely up-to-date).

Btw, I'm running OpenOffice under KDE in both Edgy and Etch.

The debian bug tracker has this issue solved (patch is attached). Maybe we can apply the patch and seed frretype through edgy-updates?
