Hi,

I am really new to this so I do not really understand how to implement the change you suggest.

However, I did read o lot from the support forum and it appears to come down to this:

alsa project info:

230 Module snd-atiixp

 231 -----------------

 232

233 Module for ATI IXP 150/200/250/400 AC97 controllers.

 234

 235 ac97_clock - AC'97 clock (default = 48000)

 236 ac97_quirk - AC'97 workaround for strange hardware

237 See "AC97 Quirk Option" section below.

 238 ac97_codec - Workaround to specify which AC'97 codec

239 instead of probing. If this works for you

 240 file a bug with your `lspci -vn` output.

 241 -2 -- Force probing.

 242 -1 -- Default behavior.

 243 0-2 -- Use the specified codec.

 244 spdif_aclink - S/PDIF transfer over AC-link (default = 1)

 245

246 This module supports one card and autoprobe.

 247

248 ATI IXP has two different methods to control SPDIF output. One is

249 over AC-link and another is over the "direct" SPDIF output. The

250 implementation depends on the motherboard, and you'll need to

251 choose the correct one via spdif_aclink module option.

 252

 253 The power-management is supported.

my computer info:

!!Loaded sound module options
!!--------------------------

!!Module: snd_atiixp
 ac97_clock : 48000
 ac97_codec : -1
 ac97_quirk : <NULL>
 enable : N
 id : <NULL>

 index : -1
 spdif_aclink : Y

What I appear to need to learn how to do is edit the "module" snd_atiixp on my ubuntu. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to do this. Please understand I am new to this and any instructions must be tailored to a buginner. If you have time to reply it would be most appreciated.

Open Applications > Accessories > Terminal, and at the prompt type the following command:

amixer set 'External Amplifier',0 mute

In fact, you probably will want to just copy and paste the above command into the Terminal, then see if audio is audible.

ok - I did exactly as you said - the only difference is that my pc responds:

Mono: Playback [off]

your first post says it should say [on]

I do very much thank you for your time

still no audio ...:(

No, my first post listed the (then) current state of the mixer control, which was "on" (unmuted). You correctly muted it, and since it had no effect, please revert that change (i.e., unmute it).

Next, change the Headphone Jack Sense control.

ok - i assume same command just add unmute ---- headphone jack sensor control currently being searched -- sorry - i am a fool - i know no commands - this is day 1 for me -- thanks for your efforts.

wow --- i simply typed amixer --- i noticed that it was giving a "surround" output

so i changed my "sound preferences"

all is well now!!!

I am sorry to have taken up your time.

I love ubuntu -- i love a non windows system!!

thanks you so much!! I am currently a linux fool but maybe someday that will change.

cheers,

tony
