Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-sounds

No sound with intel 82801db-ICH4 or Plantronics headset. Both devices are detected. In the Sound Preferences window I get the following results with the test button:

With Autodetect, Intel 82801DB-ICH$-IEC958 and ESD I get a test window but no sound.

With USB Audio, Intel 82801DB-ICH4, ALSA and OSS, I get:

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Resource busy or not available.

Equipment is Dell Dimension 2400, both alsa and oss installed.

aplay gives: "Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/startup.wav' : Signed 16 bit
Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo" but no sound. Just hangs there. I
know sound works on this system, I had it on breezy, but I didn't have the
headset then. I will re-install ubuntu sounds.

lspci output attached.

After muting headphone and line jack sense, I get sound from the speakers,
but not from the headset. Testing in sound Preferences gives the following
results:

In 'sound Events' and 'Music and Movies' everythin works except Intel
82801DB-ICH4 where I get a test window but no sound; and ESD where I get the
message: "audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink profile=music: Could not establish connection to sound
server"

In 'Audio Conferencing / Sound Playback' I get same as above, except
"audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink profile=chat: Could not establish connection to sound server"
with ESD.

In 'Audio Conferencing / Sound Capture' Things generally don't work, with
"failed to construct pipeline" or could lnot open for writing. OSS
freezes. Test sound works. The silence test also - I don't hear anything!

Re-installed e-sound. I now have sound on the headphones, even though the
volume
control and sound windows indicate the 82801DB-IDH4. I cannot switch to the
speakers.

Gnome alsa mixer shows: Masterm Master M, PCM, and Capture ON; CD ON and
Rec
is checked; Headphone is marked MUTE! Mic boost is checked, Mic select and
video
are unchecked.

USB Mixer shows: Bass, treble have no check boxes, so ON; PCM is ON, but if
I check
MUTE it goes off; mic has rec unchecked; bottom window Bass Boost and Auto
gain
control are checked.

I can listen to music on the internet. In the sound and video menu: The CD
Player
freezes or plays with no sound. Totem sometimes plays CD. Mplayer never
finds the
media. All except the CD player frequently report that the device is
busy.

Well, at least I can listen to the internet radio. Will this info help?
Any news or updates?
