Bug Description

Impossible to boot with kernel 2.6.17-10-server on a EPIA M10000.

No problems during the hard disc installation, with ubuntu-6.10-server-i386 CD install, but the OS does not load.

After the boot and grub message , the screen fills with lines :
Unknown Interrupt or fault at EIP 00000060 c0100295 00000294
Unknown Interrupt or fault at EIP 00000060 c0100295 00000294
Unknown Interrupt or fault at EIP 00000060 c0100295 00000294
Unknown Interrupt or fault at EIP 00000060 c0100295 00000294
until the computer reboots itself.

The md5sum of the iso file was OK.
The CD test integrity was also OK.

Tests have been made with different boot options:
- acpi=off
- noapic nolapic
- pci=noacpi

This is because the 2.6.17-10-server kernel is compiled with HIGHMEM64G support, which requires PAE, but the Via C3 processor used on most Epias does not support PAE. You will have to use a kernel without HIGHMEM64G support (HIGHMEM4G will work, as will NOHIGHMEM).

The same problem occurs on certain Pentium M CPUs. Most other CPUs since Pentium Pro support PAE.

I'm not that familiar with Ubuntu server; maybe someone else can let you know if there's another kernel available in the installer if the above is not sufficient help. Failing that, you should be able to install using the "alternate" rather than "server" CD.

Confirming this bug; not sure what package to assign to though as it's not really a linux-source-2.6.17 bug, but a bug in the config options selected for the installer kernel.

I suggest HIGHMEM4G is used except if the user specifically requests support for 64G of RAM. The vast majority of users using Ubuntu Server will have <=4GB RAM. As stated earlier, HIGHMEM64G requires PAE which breaks on some Via (Epia) and Pentium M chips, leading to an unbootable kernel on these systems.

Yes, I confirm that with alternate CD the problem disappears.

There is no separate installer kernel, so linux-source-2.6.17 is the right package for this.

I tried the alternate CD, and the problem doesn't disappear.

Using Compaq nc4010 with alternate CD, problem still exists.

** I also suddenly started getting the same nasty error message "unknown interrupt or fault at EIP 00000060 xxxx.........
    ................".
** It was in my PC where Fedora-6 was already installed on Primary Slave HDD, and was working very well till then.
** Lots of exercises over a few days did not yield any result. Ultimately it was found to be a simple problem.
** A Company computer technician who came to install my new Epson print-copy-scanner on the Primary Master HDD(Windows
XP) had unauthorisedly changed the Onboard Video Memory(in Setup/BIOS) from the existing 1MB to 8MB.
** When it was re-set to 1MB, Fedora-6 started working normally, and no other problem was encountered.
** Of course I told the Epson service people to instruct their technicians not to interfere with the PC System and Setup unless
they have apprised the PC user in detail and taken his clearance.

Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report.
