I dumped my Xubuntu install, and did a fresh install from the Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 1 CD, then did an update and installed thunderbird again, and it works this time. Version is: 3.1.9+nobinonly-0ubuntu1

Not sure if the version changed in the interim or if it was just broken on Xubuntu.

This appears to be a bug in the linker, although it could be triggered by undetected memory corruption from icedove. A workaround that I have found is to run:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/icedove/libxpcom_core.so icedove

(this is for icedove; on Ubuntu, replace "icedove" with "thunderbird").

Hello Sandeep,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with Thunderbird. You made this bug report in 2011 and there have been several versions of Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 734526
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Thunderbird better.
G
