Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

One cannot:
* see the URL except for hovering over the "Website" URL.
* copy the URL into the clipboard
* select parts of the label/URL

All these cases may be of interest to a user:
* a11y apps cannot see the text even if support is present in software-center
* users cannot see the URL and need to do something
* cannot copy the URL without clicking, waiting for the browser to open, and copying it from there.

Marking the bug as Invalid, as the description contradicts the specification (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#Software_item_screen).

I'm not sure that I agree that we ought to make this change. I really appreciate the current, simple, "Website" link at the bottom of each description section of the details view. The main reason that I like it is that it is always in the same place and the text is common making it always easy to notice, whereas a URL tends to be a somewhat random-looking collection of characters, different for each package and therefore would be much more of a "visual noise" item on the page I think.

Further, I'm not sure I see the real usefulness for selecting and copying a URL beyond pasting into a browser to get to a web page. If a person really wants to select the URL, they could (as you describe) just open the web page and copy/paste it from there.

Of course, a11y issues are always a priority to fix. Could you describe what exactly the problem is for a11y with the current implementation?

Many thanks!

Lucian, thanks for this report. I think it was closed a little prematurely. That the specification doesn't include something doesn't mean it shouldn't; we get lots of good ideas through bug reports.

I agree with Gary that it is good for the "Developer Web Site" link to be simple and consistent. However, as you say, it would be useful to copy the URL without having to open it in a browser first -- for example, to paste it into an IM or e-mail message.

So, here's a mini-specification:
------------
The "Developer Web Site" link should be draggable outside of USC (test case: drag it into a folder window, and into a LibreOffice document), and should also have a context menu with a single item, "Copy Link".
------------

If anyone implements that, I'll merge it into the specification at the same time.

Okay, now I feel thoroughly silly. It turns out that the link already does have a context menu similar to what I just described. So I'm marking this fixed, I've added the context menu to the main spec, and I've specced the drag-and-drop behavior as something anyone can implement later. <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter?action=diff&rev2=589&rev1=588>
