Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

My home network is 2 Dapper computers using NFS over a wire. They each have a winmodem, and for obscure reasons sometimes they each need to be able to connect to the IP as server.

I configured NM on each box with 3 locations each; server1, server2, and client. There are 2 servers because there are 2 local numbers for the IP. The main difference between server and client is the gateway IP. Each box uses the other's IP, e.g. 192.168.0.n

Every time I start NM, it defaults to the _blank_ location, not the one I configured it with just before OK'ing it closed. The actual settings seem to remain stable, but I haven't put it to the test.

I also had trouble getting the locations set up. I would create a new location, enter details, and OK it. When I reopened it, the details would have defaulted to those of the setup I was using before I created the new location. After a few times of manually entering and deleting items, it seems to have stabilized.

To be specific, I created a location, server1, with no gateway IP. When I reopened it later, it had a gateway IP, like the client location.

It is weird to open NM, select "server1", and have it go through "changing profile", then close it, and then open it again a few seconds later, drop down and click "server1", and have it change profile again. As if it forgot what profile it was running.

And, of course you can't do a "Delete current location" on the blank location, because that option is grayed out.

I recognize that I could be misunderstanding the procedure; perhaps I'm doing things in the wrong order. But may I suggest that with a GUI like this, it should be idiot-prufe enough so that there _is_ no wrong order?

Thanks

Thanks.

I'm sticking with Dapper until the next LTS, I think.

But I'm glad to hear things are progressing.

Have a great day.

I've did a network configuration and store it as 'home'. Someday I manually add another dns plus the detected from the dhcp server.
Other time I delete that dns, so there was only 1 dns from dhcp server.
From time to time (less than 1 hour) the 'phantom' dns appears. so i have to delete it again.
After a couple of days i delete the location 'home'. And the phantom dns appears again.
Then I've created a new location: 'newone'. Guess wath? The phantom dns appears again!
Everytime the phantom dns appears in network-admin it's in /etc/resolv.conf too, and the location goes blank.
If i select the 'newone' location, the settings are taken from the saved ones. And the phantom dns goes away... just for a couple of minutes!
Any idea?

I'm not sure why I got this question. I am a user, a bug-reporter, not
a developer. Asking me why this went wrong is like network-admin asking
more than one conffile--even if those files conflict--what the DNS
configurations are. It obviously does, and I obviously was asked. I
guess they have done a better job with this in Feisty. For now, I have
scaled back my expectations of network-admin and just keep it simple.
Hope you fare as well.

Gracias,

Coby

Posting here in hopes of getting this bumped to a higher priority; not sure it's the same bug but the title is exactly acurate:

I am running Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn)
to reproduce:

- open network-admin
- (optional, I think) change some settings (for example, I've specified an alternate DNS server)
- click the save button next to the "Location" drop down menu; type a name and click 'Save"
- reboot

When you open network manager again, the location will be blank, and the settings will have gone back to defaults (from dhcp I suspect). Choosing the saved location does change the settings as expected, but this is a hassle to have to do every time the computer is booted.

Alternately, instead of rebooting, you can close network-admin and just run 'sudo dhclient' and it will clear the Location.

Expected behavior would be that one could choose a default location, or the last used location and settings would be used.

Glyn, thank you for your interest. What do you want to achieve by nominating the bugs for Ubuntu versions? The problem is that the desktop teams has just a lot to do, the best way to get the bug fixed faster is to give a hand. The package you want to change is likely gnome-system-tools, maybe Carlos can give extra precisions on the code though

Hi Sebastien

I figured that since the bug tracker doesn't have a way of voting for bugs, that was the only lever available to flag the importance of the bug. I have been delighted by Feisty and this particular bug stands out compared to the usability of the other parts of the system I have used.

I admit I was surprised to be allowed to nominate the bug for a version - maybe that's something that should be restricted to committers?

Anyway, thanks for the pointer to the source...

I did a bit more investigation of the problem to see if it could be patched. /etc/resolv.conf appears to be the definitive place where the network settings are stored. This file starts with:

# generated by NetworkManager, do not edit!

I checked the source of gnome-system-tools with:

grep -R NetworkManager *

and found no instances, so I guess the file must be written by another component, such as dhcp. This is true even when network-admin is used to change the settings. Clearly more investigation is required, but I thought I'd mention this in case anyone else is thinking of developing a patch. (I have found a very satisfactory application-specific workaround, so my motivation is waning.)

I am experiencing what appears to be the same problem.

The network-admin has an unnamed default location. I have a saved location that has my correct DNS settings. However every time that I restart my computer the settings revert to the unmaned location. That means I need to do a manual configuration every time I restart.
I am using Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon

This thread talks about a DHCP server having an incorrect DNS setting.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/3674

I tried rebooting while my DHCP server was switched off. in that case I noted that /etc/resolv.conf had the expected values and network-admin had my desired location.
However once the DHCP server (http://pigtail.net/LRP/index.html) finished booting the DNS values were set to dud values and network-admin changed to using an unnamed location.

Just a helpful FYI although I am no longer using a network:

I think I remember discovering this quirk in my Dapper system when I was
manually setting domains. I remember DHCP wasn't working best for me.

Is it possible that the gap in logic is not in DHCP but in a library it
uses? That gets used even when it is off?

Thanks,

I did not add enough about my set up in the last post.
I am using an old computer as a hardware firewall and DHCP server. The Network Settings (network-admin) was getting the incorrect values from my DHCP server. Once I fixed that DNS server IP addresses on my DHCP server the issue of "lost location" was not causing me DNS setting headaches.

HOWEVER, Network Settings still does not show a value in "Location". It would be useful for the Network Settings to indicate that the setting have come from an outside source. This would then cause less confusion as to why the location is not set.

Thanks

not sure how voting works or if there is any but ... hear hear! I am not sure if Network Manager never saves location or if it depends on the setup but:
1) there is no way (that I know of) to add details (like domain resolution) without working with locations
2) there is no way (that I know of) to make location default or to make it 'autorecognize' by subnet or something.

So at the moment I do use location and I have to set location every time I reboot (or go into suspend, I think it resets then too, suspend stopped working with Heron so I can't test)

I will look into source but... I am pretty lame with linux/C++ :(

This is the intended actions of the Network Manager as per the man page:

The NetworkManager daemon attempts to keep an active network connection available at all times.
The point of NetworkManager is to make networking configuration and setup as painless and automatic

I'd say this WASN'T the intended action of Network Manager which (according to the man page you cite) is "making networking Just Work." This interaction makes networking Just Fail and for no apparent reason.

It is a bug: a logical consequence of the code that was written that, for unforeseen reasons, works AGAINST the goals of the program. It's doing what they said, but not what they wanted.

NetworkManager, if it is to be more useful than annoying, needs to recognize when the user makes changes to the network and have some why to preserve those, rather than just playing "mama knows best" and ignoring use specified configuration information.

Pedro--

The network manager interface has changed so much since Dapper, I
don't have any idea if this is still a problem. Now all I do is share
folders with Samba and printers with CUPS (except that isn't working
right...another story). Instead of the network manager I use folder
sharing options, which seems to work. Point of fact, I've stayed away
from using network profiles, assuming that it's a poorly supported
feature.

And I've been using Natty since December. What was Dapper, 6.04?
That's been a while!

Thanks,

Coby
