Bug Description

Hi!

A fresh install of 6.10 gives me this when I try to load the ipw2200 module:

kernel: [17184038.652000] ieee80211: 802.11 data/management/control stack, git-1.1.13
kernel: [17184038.652000] ieee80211: Copyright (C) 2004-2005 Intel Corporation <email address hidden>

kernel: [17184038.680000] ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation
kernel: [17184038.680000] Driver 'ipw2200' needs updating - please use bus_type methods
kernel: [17184038.684000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:03:03.0[A] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 177
kernel: [17184038.684000] ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
kernel: [17184044.304000] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:03:03.0 disabled
kernel: [17184044.304000] ipw2200: probe of 0000:03:03.0 failed with error -5

I am running a Dell inspiron 6000, and the card worked fine under 6.06 and under gentoo (2.6.19).

Please tell me if you need any more info.

Thanks,
Shwouchk.

an update:

I have noticed that if I remove power to the device (Fn+F2) and then load the module, it loads fine:

I notice it sais

And the next line is
Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking to work

So how do I turn radio OFF?

I think you want to turn the radio ON. The kill switch turns the radio OFF to save battery life. There should be a button to turn wireless on and off on your notebook. Just push it into the other position and it should enable wireless (assuming the switch isn't broken).

I just got the ipw2200 working on an Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG. I'm running the Ubuntu 7.10 (Oct.2007) Live-CD on a Dell Inspiron 6000. At first, the device did not work at all. There are two BIOS settings for the wireless device. For me they were set to disable the wireless device on start-up, and enable the FN+F2 hot key. This wasn't working for me, although it didn't help that the LED never lit, so I didn't know the on/off state. Anyway, I changed the BIOS settings (F2 on start-up), to enable wireless device on start up, and to enable application control which also disables the Fn+F2 hardware hotkey. The wireless worked automatically upon booting Linux. I just had to click the network icon in the upper right and connect.

Hello,

I haven't tried using ubuntu 7.10 on this laptop so I don't know if the issue was solved or not yet.

What I do know is that it's not the bios settings (although they may have helped you) - I use Sabayon now (with the said settings turned on) and the F2 button works. If you ever decide to turn them back to the way they were, you can see if wifi is killed or not by running 'iwconfig' in a console. If it says 'unassociated' (or associated, of course) then it is on. if says 'off' in the 'power' tab, then it is turned off (I hope I made sense).

Hi,

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. If the issue still exists, please add the Hardy kernel "linux" task to the bug report. This can be done by clicking on the "Also affects distribution" link in the Actions area on left hand side of the bug report. Select "Ubuntu" as the Distribution and type in "linux" for the Source Package Name. Thanks.
