Bug Description

The default icon for Pidgin has a green circle when you are online, a blue clock when you are idle, and a yellow message icon when an unread message has arrived. The Xubuntu icon theme overrides this, with a purple text bubble that shows no state information. This is a regression in functionality.

this workaround solves the problem:

sudo ln -s /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/tray/hicolor/22x22/status /usr/share/icons/elementaryXubuntu/status/22

the workaround is not correct:
after running the command:

sudo ln -s /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/tray/hicolor/22x22/status /usr/share/icons/elementaryXubuntu/status/22

edit the file /usr/share/icons/elementaryXubuntu/index.theme

add status/22, in the Directories string, see below:
#Directory list
Directories=actions/16,actions/24,apps/16,apps/24,apps/48,apps/64,devices/48,notifications/48,panel/22,places/24,places/48,places/64,places/128,status/48,status/22,

and at the end of the file add the following 4 lines:

[status/22]
Size=22
Context=Status
Type=Fixed

the file index.theme modified is attached

Solution of Renzo Filinie did not work for me:

This solves the icon problem for me on Xubuntu 11.10:

Download icons from: http://xfce-look.org/content/show.php/Elementary+Tray+Icons+4+Pidgin?content=126339
Make new folder called 22 in folder: /usr/share/icons/elementaryXubuntu-dark/status/22
 (ps. elementaryXubuntu-dark can be replaced by the another elementary theme for icons)
Paste into this 22 folder the icons you have unzipped from the downloaded file. (content of folder tray/hicolor/22x22/status)

Restart Pidgin and you are done

This bug was fixed in the package xubuntu-artwork - 12.04.1

---------------
xubuntu-artwork (12.04.1) precise; urgency=low

  * usr/share/icons: refreshed,
    - add some missing icons used by xfce4-settings and the panel/desktop menu.
    - "Pidgin Notification Area icon does not indicate arrival of new messages"
      lp: #850376
    - "Ubuntu Software Center & Synaptic have the same icon in Xubuntu"
