Happened on clean installation. I tested with Unity 3D, Unity 2D, Gnome Shell. In combination with the drivers 285.05.09-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1 and 280.13-0ubuntu6. Works well only in "gnome classic no effects".

Hardware Model: EeePC-0123456789
Hardware video: MCP79 PCI Express Bridge - nVidia / ION VGA [GeForce 9400M]

I think the problem is on the desktop, when using "advanced visual effects." In gnome without effects, everything works fine.

I was able to use two external monitors (had to turn off the laptop display) with twinview and 11.04. However in 11.10, when I attempt to enable twinview on the second external monitor, nvidia-settings crashes.

Attached in the nvidia-settings output for glxinfo

Works Now: If I set the laptop monitor to disabled first, before trying to enable twinview (but didn't apply any setting changes). Then enable twinview on both monitors (a warning was output, but nvidia-settings didn't crash and can currently use both external monitors).

Today, I did an upgrade of xserver-xorg (1:7.6+7ubuntu7), and the problem was solved. No more problems.

The nvidea driver I use is: 285.05.09-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1

I still see the problem on my system even with the same version of xserver-xorg (1:7.6+7ubuntu7).
The workaround provided by Greg King (greg-james-king) works but if you close the nvidia-settings UI it won't open again (process starts but does not render the UI and it makes one CPU-core go to 100%).
Any fixes for this?

I was able to get this fixed by installing the new LINUX X64 (AMD64/EM64T) DISPLAY DRIVER 290.10 from http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-amd64-290.10-driver.html

From the debian bug looks like this will be resolved when we merge nvidia-settings 290.

The TwinView solution was given up in favour RandR. This means that screen configuration is possible with the system provided graphical tools.

There is enough reason to understand this bug can be closed as a newer version of software-package didn't make it appear any longer.
